What is the first thing that pops up in your mind when someone say, "Are you gay?". We know that gay is another word for homosexual and lots of people do not use the word gay like they used to do in the old school days. So, has the word "gay" officially been replaced with that meaning as we hardly hear people use it to express "carefree" or "happy" which is the original meaning of the word "gay". I wonder how the homosexuals got to be called as "gay". Any mylotters know?

Homosexuals are called gay because it describes them ! Look at homosexuals , they are always laughing , smiling , as if having no problem and owning the whole world. They are living their lives as if it is their last.

Wow those are strong words especially the last sentence. Angelpink, is the last sentence a testimony spoken by a homosexual? or are you just making those up? *headache*

Micha , am not a gay ..i am very much a woman ! No , i just speak the way i observed how a homosexual behaves. In your place how do they behave ? In us here , in any place as long as their is this homosexual , the place would really if in joyful mood and mode. They are so talented although very much attention seeker but it is okay , still they give a smile in our face.

Well, i think i'm very gay, having seven sons, lol! Really happy for that. I think the "gay" association to homosexuals started from a pun of the word "guy". There is this woman who seems to have been disgusted and disappointed with her blind date who was always funny and happy, and when a friend called her, she stated, "I'm with a very gay guy." LOL!

That's outright funny but it's also possible that the word "gay" started like that. Thanks for responding.

Do you remember the day that if you said that you were gay, It meant with joy that you could sing and shout. A fairy was enchanting, and dressing up and camping Was something that you did with the Scouts. That carefree age when an urgent case of aids Was powdered milk we sent to the Sahara, A fruit was something sweet to eat, a poof was something for your feet, And a queen was an old tart in a tiara. I think they are called gays since they are happy to be with. Gay is synonymous to happy. Having gay in the company will really make you laugh on their jokes and make you happy with them.

I would say that most people have forgotten the word as a lot of people seem to think it only means homosexual or that something sucks. I find it amusing that it has kept evolving and that people now use it as something even unrelated to homosexuality. When I hear the word the meaning depends on the context, I am familiar with the original meaning so I don't just assume the newer meanings. I'm not too sure when the meaning changed but I have heard that gay started being associated with homosexuals in the 70's.

It must have to be in two meanings, one is formally known, "gay" as in homosexual. The other could just be an expression of pointing someone that is aggressive, active, and extremely joyful.

Ahh yes. I play with this word a lot. I confuse girls by saying "I'm gay". Most have actually forgotten the word in its literal meaning. They in an instant associate the word with homosexuality and give me those weird looks. Then I give a thunderous laughter and explain what I meant. Then they understand the joke and join my laughter. So this makes me wonder sometimes. Have people really forgotten the actual meaning? Or is it that the first alternative that comes to their mind is homosexuality, especially when a man says he's gay. I don't know how the word came to be used for homosexuals. Maybe someone will answer it, so I'll be following this discussion to get enlightened. Good day!
