I have now got cable television and on it I have seen a program called 'I didn't know I was pregnant'. A lady saw her parents off on a trip to Hawaii. She was getting strong pain her stomach and back. She was crying due to the pain and she had a bath to ease the pain. She felt downwards and she touched a foot. What a shock because she was having a breech birth. She called for her younger brother and he was shocked because of the pain she was in and the news she was having a baby. She had a baby daughter. Do you like to watch documentaries on television? Why do some American ladies not know that they are pregnant?

That same thing happened to my cousin. She was pregnant and had no idea. She had her monthly cycle like normal and when she went to the doctor for a check up they did not even notice. She was home alone one night and felt that she had to go to the bathroom and when she did she went to wipe and there was a head so it does happen not very often but it does happen. Some times women think that they know their bodies so well and they continue to have their cycle it can be that you would not know your pregnant and some times gas can make your stomach move and jump like a baby so I can see how they would not know till they were in labor. Crazy but real. LOL. When I asked my cousin about it she said to me that she did not know she was pregnant due to the fact that her doctor was an idiot and told her that it was just gas that was causing her stomach to jump around he never even checked to see what it would be. So sometimes its not just the woman that misses it its the doctor too.

Wow! It is amazingly shocking that a similar thing happened to your cousin. Even worse she went to see a doctor and he wasn't able to tell her she was pregnant. Feeling ill in the bathroom, going to wipe and there being a head would be so terrifying. That was a home birth with a mysterious feel to it. Having a period tells the lady she isn't pregnant. How strange the lady was pregnant but didn't find out until the day her baby was born.

Wow that's horrible. I didn't know one can still have their period like normal. Shocking story.

Oh, that's really surprising. She got pregnant without her knowledge? Having 9 months without menstruation means something was wrong with her. I hope she saw a doctor so that she had found out about it earlier. Thanks for sharing and happy mylotting.

She carried on getting much lighter than normal periods at time she expected them. She did a pregnancy test and it was negative. The doctors think her baby was born when she was 7 months pregnant. Yes, I wish she had found out earlier in the pregnancy.

Oh, she had some spottings so she thought it was her menstruation. Some pregnancy tests aren't accurate. I hope she did it every month. She gave birth early. I hope both of them are in good condition now.

I know what show you are talking about and I have seen it a few times. To me I was amazed that the women had NO clue they were pregnant! In both of my pregnancies (I have 2 daughters) I knew as my belly got big, I was urinating a lot more, back pain, swelling, nausea, etc. I guess in some women it can happen where the symptoms don't show up at all!

True enough! If I was still getting periods and not gaining weight like crazy or having any other pregnancy symptoms I would just assume I wasn't pregnant. Especially if I did a home pregnancy test and it showed up negative. How strange!

I am glad that you have seen this show. In early pregnancy it feels like my bra area is very tender and sore. I urine more than normal and worse of all I get a strange taste in my mouth like metal. I get sickly feelings in the evening time if in early pregnancy. I can get a tiny show of blood in my knickers when implantation has happened. Some ladies that are in their early forties think they can't get pregnant and so miss understand the symptoms. The growing bump I feel must show the lady. However still having periods and little weight gain it would be strange.

I have heard stories about this. One young woman drowned her child in the toilet, pleaded insanity and got off. She was a student who said she continued to have periods and was not aware of her condition. I guess pregnancy does not reveal itself in every woman in the same way. I would imagine that such a surprise could make a woman do just about anything. Hopefully, it would not involve hurting the child.

Yes, hopefully such a lady won't hurt her baby. It must be a very big shock and surprise for a lady that is totally unaware she is pregnant. It was such a shame the young lady your heard about drowned her baby in the toilet. I wish other ladies with a surprise pregnancy won't do that. The best thing to do would be call for an ambulance.

I agree. Hurting the child or endangering the child is a crime.

I wondered about that too. Wouldn't you notice your belly growing if you were pregnant? I just don't get it.

She didn't put on much weight in the pregnancy. She carried on getting lighter than normal periods. She did a pregnancy test and the result was negative. In my pregnancies my bump was there by 16 weeks pregnancy and was very big by the time I gave birth.

In both my pregnancies I too gained the belly rather quickly, but I guess for some women it is not uncommon! Also if you do a pregnancy test and it is negative you just assume that is the correct result. Some women have to have a blood test done in order for it to show up and does not show up in urine for some reason!

I've heard something like this in the hospital in our place where my aunt is working. But it was the parents who doesn't know that their daughter who was living with them was pregnant and in labor pains. They thought it was just a normal abdominal pain. The girl was chubby then and when they arrived in the Emergency Room with the complain of abdominal pains. After some other examinations done the cause of the pain wasn't traced and lastly the doctor do the "IE" (Internal Exam) for pregnant women the doctor found out that "its crowning" 10 cm cervix dilated and head of the baby was already there. To the parent's surprise their daughter was rushed to the delivery room.

That must have been surprising for a medical person like a doctor to examine a girl and find out that she is 10 cm dilated or the baby's head is crowning. I feel very sorry for the parents not knowing their daughter was pregnant. Maybe the girl was hiding her pregnancy having baggy clothing on.

My Aunt saw the that patient because she was on duty when it happened. Her abdominal size was just proportioned to her body weight because she was chubby then that's why her parents didn't noticed it because her abdominal size increased in size but not very far from the usual. And her parents already used seeing her that way.

Hello maxim. Well the truth is this having a baby and not knowing your pregnant happens a lot more than we think. it happens to about 1 in 600 and it's not just American women. This article is in a U.K. paper and discusses three women that had babies and didn't know they were expecting. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1281456/How-woman-know-pregnant-gave-birth-A-new-study-suggests-common-think.html One even had twins. Some women don't gain much weight. I knew a lady that didn't show at all and I had a cousin that didn't show either. Not everyone goes through the same symptoms. Some people apparently don't have any symptoms. Me,I showed the minute I got pregnant. Didn't have much in the way of morning sickness or other signs except the lack of period and that baby bump.

He Deebomb. Thanks for your wonderful response and including the newspaper article about the ladies not knowing they were expecting. If it is one in six hundred pregnant ladies it is more common than I had thought. I used to know a lady before she moved. She thought she was infertile and she was having meetings about this. The appointments lady phoned her and said did she want an appointment on such and such day. She said she felt very much like she could be pregnant. She spoke to her consultant and she said yes take a pregnancy test. She had very bad morning sickness and it was the pointer she was expecting twins. She was as well.

I love that - American ladies. They aren't actually all American ladies on that show. In short, they are dumb.

I've seen that show, it seems a little odd to me that a woman wouldn't know if she was pregnant or not. It doesn't sound like she's in tune with her body at all. I like documentaries because I learn much more than I would if I had to research the topic. My favorites are about history, they give more information than what I learned in school.

I am glad that you watch that program sometimes. I like historical programs too. I know the feelings of early pregnancy and would go to get a home pregnancy test if my period didn't arrive. It is worth a lady knowing the last day her period began.

I think this situation would be one of my worst nightmares - not knowing I was pregnant until actually going into LABOUR!!! My school friend, when her mum was pregnant with her younger brother, she also didn't know she was pregnant until she went into labour - quite a scary thought especially if it was your first child! Lol

I wonder the same thing. I can't imagine first of all that there are so many females out there who are pregnant and don't know it, that they could actually have a TV show about this. I know I knew right away when I was pregnant for both my babies. Its just so strange that so many people experience this. I remembe years ago when my cousin came over and when she left I told my mom so-and so looks pregnant. My mom had said her sister didn't say anything about it. So I left it alone though I assisted she was pregnant. Two days later her mom is calling my mom to say her daughter is in labor. No one seemed to know it. I'm still not sure if my cousin played it off that she didn't know or she did and was lying to her mom. Crazy stuff though going through eight or nine months and not know you are pregnant.

It absolutely can happen that they don't know. Some people barely grow at all, or if they are already big to begin with they might not notice the extra weight being put on. Some people already have conditions where they have certain symptoms of pregnancy. Urinating a lot all the time, lower back pain, muscle spasms feel like the baby kicking in your belly, some people still have their period as normal. There are plenty of the same things that are other conditions as well... It doesn't surprise me that some people really don't know. I do watch that show from time to time, I like it...

I agree that some people have medical conditions that are similar to pregnancy symptoms. If a lady gets her period she feels comfortable knowing she is not pregnant. I am glad that you watch that program sometimes.

Oh yeah it is possible at times that the lady is not able to make out that she is pregnant. Some ladies when pregnant, do not gain much and their belly also is small, especially girls who are skinny. My neighbor was pregnant and no one could make out. Also in rare cases the girl has her menses also as normal. this is very rare. So, I can imagine the the lady not knowing she was pregnant. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

On that same program a lady didn't ever have periods. Doctors said that due to that she was infertile. She didn't use birth control because she wasn't going to ever get pregnant. She didn't know it but she did get pregnant and she went into labor thinking she was very ill. The doctor said maybe she had one period and got pregnant at exactly her fertile time. I wonder if she will have periods later in her life. It is interesting some ladies that are pregnant have a small belly. It is fascinating your neighbor was pregnant but she still had a small belly. Yes, some very thin ladies can look not pregnant due to their slimness. Have a lovely day.

I have heard of this, and even knew someone who says she didn't know until she had the baby. I can't understand how you could not know. First of all you would have to be really fat, not to notice the weight gain. How could you explain not having your period for 9 months. Usually when I hear this, I really don't believe it.

Really? I thought it was impossible not to know that a woman was pregnant knowing the fact that pregnancy experiences symptoms. :)

I just love watching documentaries. I love learning about realities in life. Sometimes we need to see reality to open our mind not just dwell on the ideals. we need to know how to balance the two. I'm not sure why some ladies are not aware of their pregnancies. They may have been denying the possibility or just not entertaining the thought until the time comes that they can confirm it.
