chemical that causes addiction or over-consumption in food

everyone can agree with me on this: it would be immoral for a food company to suddenly introduce a chemical or compound into its food package that should cause consumers to binging or over-consumption? Right? But what if that chemical or compound that can dispose one towards over-consumption is already part of foods delivered to us by food companies? Would that still be immoral or unethical? Obesity is a health hazard and over-consumption is a real scare. If discovered, would such food package be banned, where it is already in the market?

I'm not yet aware of any chemicals in particular that might have this effect, though the list of additives on the ingredients labels on food packaging might give some cause for concern especially when it's hard to recognize them as being foodstuffs! The amount of sugars we consume in sodas and hidden in our (processed) foods can't be good. Also,The high calorie value of fast foods (and the portion sizes) must also be an issue for concern when the recommended daily intake for an manual working active adult is being sometimes consumed by someone who has a mostly sedentary lifestyle at just one mealtime in the day ....it's a slippery slope... The phrase "Buyer Beware" holds true whatever it may be you're paying for..

thanks for your comment. the high calorie value of fast foods is surely a cause for concern especially when people overconsume. Particularly so, when their brains are tuned without their knowledge to overconsume. it can be scary but it is usual. when this is found out, then we all have to be on our guard. just like in the phrase "caveat emptor" or as you said "buyer beware."

True! I actually read a post regarding codes of places where the food has been made, specially now that people or consumers are aware of what China been adding to its food products. Since people tried all they can to not get products from China, so it's producer tries to hide from the package where it came from so that consumer may not know. Well... we can see it on the code with the first four digit. I just forget though what's theirs starts with. I might look at it again and save it on my cellphone so that I can use it whenever I go buy groceries. So creepy... we'll never know what in our food!

Hi, Maybe it is one reason for the people who consume synthetic foods in big amounts. Its really addicting, the fries, the chips, the burgers and those over the counters of some high class fastfoods stores. For now, no law has defined it whether it is unethical, just like genetically modified organism/plants. Its free business too, the lawmakers may have their interests and stocks there. I don't really cater to those kind of food, preferring more the natural foods from the backyard and the jungle which I can only afford.

it's more really an issue on uncertain grounds when the actual ingredient used in those foods have not been identified. It'll take lots of years to convince anyone that gm foods or whatever are the cause because you and I know - they'll never be else they're out of business. I think common sense always prevails in this matters but when addiction and binging comes to the table, then common sense is thrown out to the graveyard. to the jungles and the backyards. thanks
