Can You Laugh at Yourself?

I love to make people laugh! It is incredible how much fun I and my friends have had at my black eye.. Maybe you read about how I got it last week. It is getting better now, but I still go out with sunglasses on and look like a mysterious lady. One of the best jokes I heard from a friend about this was a question: Have you run into the direction indicator of a bicycle? I still laugh when I think of it - I know the great sense of humor this friend has. I have said to people that I have nobody to fight with, so I have to fight with the floor! Well, better have all the fun I can while the eye is still lilac.. Can you laugh at yourself when others laugh at you?

I've had 2 black eyes, both pretty impressive, but I did my best to be humorous about them. Fact is that I got a broken thumb from being kicked teaching horse back riding.... I was kicked by a RIDER!

A broken thumb, ouch! I hope the rider didn't do it on purpose.. Well I hope you had twice as fun as I did - I had only one black eye..

Nope, not intentionally kicked me... but it still hurt pretty bad. Actually, the first black eye came from horse back riding as well, but it was caused by a horse and a close encounter with the ground...

Well when my friend laugh at me especially when it is jokes i laugh at myself as well because if i stay there just looking at them laughing at me i will feel shame on myself so my way of avoiding shame on myself is by me just laughing with them but stilling having a little shame down inside...

Hi, misjoseph I am sure you feel better if you laugh at yourself together with the others than just feeling ashamed. The longer we live, the more we understand that sooner or later we have to accept our mistakes and try again and do it better.

Very much. Until 9 or 10 years ago I had the voice in my head of a person that always put me down, I realized that person wasn't with me anymore and still it was this person's voice. I took the decision to be good with myself and it was a hard work but now that I think back it lasted only a year! I changed, accepted me and I really find funny the things that I can make it better, the way I am is funny in many ways.

Sorry,I have missed your discussion about what happened to your eye.Fortunately you have felt better. You seems to be the type of person who doesn't take it seriously that others play joke on you.I think grinning all the time is good for your health.

I guess I have learned to see things with humor, as my parents were like that. And it is an advantage, as it makes us healthier to be able to smile and laugh when we can!!

I guess I can work better at this. I think that when things like that happen to me I get upset about what happened or what I did to cause injury. We recently moved into a new place and I just found out last week that you can not open the oven half or it comes all the way back up. That happened to me and I burned my arm. In this case I'm more annoyed with the oven because I hate the fact that I have to pull the oven all the way down to get something out. I have an almost year and a half daughter and I hate the fact that while I'm trying to get something out of the oven and it being all the way down she could run over there. The last stove we had in our old place must have been awesome because this one is going to give me problems I know it.

Well, better put your daughter in a safe place or ask someone look after her when you open the oven. I guess you are more careful next time so that you don't burn yourself - we have to be careful, but sometimes it can be good to be able to laugh at our own mistakes..

Yeah I have been careful around the oven now that I know how it has to be opened. And usually have my daughter stay far back or if my husband is home then she will stay over by where he is. Because I definitely do not want her to get hurt.

Sounds like you will be healthier than most other people. Let's take every opportunity to laugh - laughing to ourselves can't hurt anyone, so that is the safest thing to do..

Oh yes, I can laugh at myself. It seems only fair really, if others can have fun laughing at me then should I be left out. I have always had a rather bizarre sense of humour and I am probably the biggest culprit when it comes to making fun of friends. Naturally it is without malice, but it is something that I cannot resist. I have always had the opinion that if I can laugh at others then I should accept the same, and if something is humourous then I will enjoy it, irrespective of whether it is directed at myself or others.

A good thing, Asylum is that you can laugh at yourself. In cases where others are involved: Maybe it's better wait and see if the others have the same sort of humor as you have. If they laugh, then join them..

I wish I was more like you, I can't laugh at myself and I get annoyed when others laugh at me even if I know it is in fun.

Hi, winterose We are all different and have a different background and perhaps sometimes we can train our sense of humor - I'm sure you have a sense of humor but it may be a bit different. We might like to test if some kind of nutrition makes us happier - I believe Omega3 and coconut oil affects our mood a great deal. Avoiding wheat and hardened oils can help too. I am doing all this and it seems to help a great deal and I hope I will keep the sense of humor as long as I can. Keep laughing when you can, my friend, it is good for the health..

I have a great sense of humor , and I love to laugh . I like making jokes of others and I laugh also when they make joke of me . That is one of the quality I look for when making friends . I one time bring jacket to school because it was raining and cold where I am coming from and everyone in my class was laughing asking if I am going to Alaska lol and I wasn't even wearing it , I had to start laugh . When I meet the right person even online they will make me laugh even in just words lol .... Sometimes I am simple reading a comment I get on Facebook and I will burst out in laugh .

I used to get bullied at school, so I know what it feels like to have other people laughing at you all of the time. One of the things that I learned to try and help me to stop being bullied was to laugh along with them. Whenever they said anything about me I would say something back to play along with the joke, and try to make it out as though it wasn't bothering me. Eventually they got bored with it and stopped making the comments, so now I try to laugh at myself because I feel as though people won't be able to hurt you as much if you do that.

Wow, Gemma - that was smart. More kids should be tauhgt to do that - might stop the bullying!! And the kids should be taught not to bully anyone, of course. But your method seemst to be a good one.

Yes, I can laugh at myself when others are laughing at me. I guess it just really depends on what they are laughing about me. Otherwise, I am usually the first one laughing at myself, but I love to make people laugh even if it is something silly I've done. Like I've tripped over something and I fell in a awkward way or I just said something that was really stupid.

Good evening dear friend Buenavida , hmmm well honestly , i haven't had yet time to read the story on how you got your balck eye , but i hope first of all that it wasn"t really painfull , as for you question , i guess that depending of situation i already been in funny possitions , and made a laugh of myself , and off course all people around me and my friends werre all laughing on the floor , and then it made me laugh too realising the position i'm in , and honestly i can't see gett angry or mad because someone laughed at you because you made something funny , even if the intention of the act wasn't to draw attention and amuse people. I wish you a great week and a nice evening dear Buenavida. HosmanF.

I too try to laugh at myself. There is no point taking life too seriously life is much easier if you can take things with good humour. You need to be able to have a laugh to be in my group of friends. The people i hang around with at university have a great laugh we all laugh at each other and at ourselves and get on with eachother really well.Though i think the ability to laugh at yourself is really common in groups of young lads.

Well, talking fast can be an advantage sometimes if you are in a real hurry. Sometimes it can be good to stop and listen - otherwise you will never know what interesting things you will hear..

Yeah, I love laughing, even laughing at myself because I know theres something that I can laugh at myself. I remember my college life when all my classmates talked about something strange, like the topic "what if..." something like that, we're all participated because everyone have there own jokes with that, and yeah its all fun back then, I miss that time.

I sometimes laugh at myself if I make a silly mistake. But sometimes I laugh at myself just to erase the embarrassing case.

Yes, we can laugh in both cases, it helps.. Everyone makes silly and embarrassing mistakes, and if they see you laugh at your own mistakes, they feel that they can do the same..

Of course, it is better to laugh with your own stupidity or your own mistake for you to feel comfortable and not be disgusted or easily got angry with their jokes or jests with you.

It may seem pretty hard at first but I think the trick to it is not to take yourself too seriously. When you can do that, then it becomes easy to laugh at yourself when others do. People who have a great sense of humor are some of the happiest people and that is always a good thing. :)
