Guestbooks

I was remembering today how common it used to be for web sites to have guestbooks for visitors to "sign" and add comments to. I think they've largely been superseded by comment sections...but those are of course mainly on blogs and news sites whereas guestbooks used to be on all kind of sites. Probably the main reason they're so uncommon now is because spammers started to really attack them aggressively and basically took them over on a lot of sites. Do you still use guestbooks on your sites or do you sign them on other sites? Do they still have a place on the modern Web?

I think with comment sections and contact sections (like an e-mail address where you could send questions), they are redundant. People can ask their questions under the relevant posts, and can send e-mails... well, it's a cute thing to have, but pointless. Oh, and the spambots... well, they can write those in the comment section, too, but guiestbooks are an easier target.

I used to enjoy signing guest books though many just used them for spam and posting linkage to their own sites.
