After a short tenure which saw him lead Chelsea to an unexpected, yet hard-won,Champions League glory as well as the FA Cup,Roberto di Matteo was given his marching orders yesterday. Is this harsh? Could players like Torres done more for their manager and club? Does Abramovich know what he is doing - this will now be the 9th managerial appointment under his ownership. Furthermore, can Rafa Benitez do any better -he has already had health issues -surely it will not help his blood pressure by working for the Russian axe-swinger!

yeah..it`s surprised Roman Abramovic is very cruel he never remind that Di matteo is the first coach which can bring champions league trophy to stamford bridge it`s only 6 dissapointed games and i think the league isn`t over.. why Roman is very cruel??

I guess he didn't get where he is now as an oil tycoon by being a shrinking violet, but his heavy-handed approach has no place in football. Even his massive faux pas in demanding the acquisition of Shevchenko some years ago still did not teach him to butt out of team selection. It seems that Torres is now his pet, but his performances have been largely dismal for some time -certainly not worth £50m. Roman should swallow his pride and leave team matters in the hands of the manager. RDM has done a great job and should have been given more time.Chelsea started the EPL season really well and because of the now likely CL exit and a slight drop in domestic form, his fantastic exploits of last season have been suddenly forgotten. I suppose that money talks and few,if anyone,at Chelsea are likely to stand up to Abramovich -which is to the detriment of the club.

yes, i agree with you it`s unfair for Di matteo.. roman should be patient changing a new manager isn`t good solution his team is okay i think with the position 3rd position in league, chelsea still have chance for getting EPL trophy as long as they improved their performance.. in champions league, they still have chance i think.. it can`t change the situation when changing a new manager in this situation

Yes, I think the best transfer that Chelsea can make now is to get rid of Abramovich's twin failing strikers, called Arrogance and Stubborn-Pride!

8 managers in 9 years!! That too managers who have been mostly top class managers either at National or International level. I do not think anyone now really cares about whether Roman will fire a manager, they only as when will he fire a manager. I think he is secretly waiting for Guardiola to come out of his hibernation (read sabbbatical) and till then Benitez would be around. Then he will hear the dreaded words "You're fired!!". Cheers! Ram

In fact Benitez know he only has one season because Abramovich would find someone else to replace him. I think it's ture that Pep Guardioala is who Abramovich loves. But I really doubt that Pep could not do a better job than Rafa. For Benitez, he seems to got payment from Inter even after he's got fired. His journey in Inter gave him horrible reputation. Now he could no longer get paid. He needs a job. And to get back into the mainstream soccer field, he had to find a chance to show his talents. I think the Chelsea job now is a very good choice for him. And for Chelsea, Benitez is an experienced manager who could do a great job. It could be a win-win result. The main problem is that it seems that Chelsea fans hate Rafa due to his relationship with Jose. And Rafa is a very professional person who would not become friends with players while he would not have conflicts with them. That might lead him to fail in Chelsea. He should be careful. I hope it could be a win-win result. For Pep, I think he shouldn't accept the offer from Abramovich at all. He should know that Rafa's reputation has been hurt due to his journey in Inter. Rafa should not be responsible for the results he got in Inter as Jose left a high-age squad and Inter didn't agree to buy anyone for Rafa. But the result is that Rafa's reputation was badly influenced. Pep should know this lesson. Both Chelsea and Inter have bosses who are not good at soccer management. They might not support the managers well and they are good at sacking. So if Pep failed at Chelsea, others would think that he only suits Barca. That's quite possible as Barca is such a special team.

Yes, it has been more than rumoured that Abramovich is waiting for Pep to commit. However, I don't think that even he will give Chelsea the immediate turnaround that RDM achieved. Guardioala was great at Barca and takes much of the credit for their fantastic reputation but Chelsea is a different proposition. I don't think Messi will ever be prised from Barca and,in any case, I don't think the confined space of Stamford Bridge's pitch would suit Pep's brand of passing game so much. I think the post will continue to be a poisoned chalice as long as Roman is there and would not surprised to see Guardioala become the 10th sacked casualty in the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

At this moment it looks like a win win situation. But if Rafa gets sacked by Roman at the end of the season, and Chelsea has not improved during this period, then I think it will really hurt Rafa's reputation, having failed at Inter and to a certain degree with Liverpool as well. As for Pep time only will tell whether he will fall for the lure of Chelsea job or not. Cheers! Ram

It is not a surprise for me. Abramovich didn't like Di Matteo at all. It has been rumored for many months that Benitez would be the temporary manager for Chelsea. But Di Matteo won the Euro Champions League. That makes Abramovich felt it hard to change a manager before this season. Now Chelsea is going to stop their journey in this season's champions league! So it's a good excuse to eliminate the manager he didn't like. Of course Di Matteo was fired. I think that Rafa Benitez could do some good job as he is a good manager. But what I am worrying is that Abramovich would not believe him as Abramovich wants Pep. But I definitely think that Rafa is much better for Pep. Pep had done brilliant jobs in Barca. But he may not be suitable in EPL matches. Rafa also done brilliant jobs with Liverpool in EPL. So he's the better choice. I doubt whether Rafa Benitez could make Torres play better as he's injury had made him worse in speed. But Rafa could give Torress some confidence. And I believe that he would do some great job in Chelsea.

Since Abramovich goes for world-class managers, Pep would have been a perfect choice, after his success at Barcelona. The question remains: for how long will Pep stay? Abramovich needs to pick a good manager, and give him at least a 5-year stint. Should there be any problems with the player selection, this should be worked on very patiently, strategically and tactfully. Therefore, Abramovich should not expect instant results. He should be more patient than he has been in the past. Finally, he should give his manager a free hand in player selection. Each manager has his own game strategy, and the players that would fit into that formation.

more surprising, today they appointed Rafa Benitez??????????? what they expect from him He couldn't even lift Liverpool stats. well, I think they can say good bye to the European Champion league and congratulation to duo Manchester, your rival is minus one, both of you may forget Chelsea.

Yes, Abramovich seems obsessed with Torres and must think that Rafa can re-kindle his former red-hot Liverpool form. I think that it is a forlorn hope as one man does not maketh a team, not even Messi...and certainly not Fernando.Abramovich should stop living on his memories/dreams and begin to live in the real world. I think he is trying too hard to recoup vale on his failed investment...Torres, and should just man up,accept HIS mistake and try a different approach.

Is there anything positive about the Chelsea manager turnover? May be. Each new manager brings a new lease of life for a while before exiting. The only problem is, after having already sent off world-class managers like Mourinho, whom will Abramovich hire next?
