Waiting for a train

Do you get bored waiting for a train? Which is the longest time you have waited for a train. I waited for around four hours at a village train station in Bulgaria. The train from Istanbul to Bucharest was running late. Yesterday I was a documentary about radio presenter traveling in the Republic on Congo. He had to wait for days at the train station not hours. It was very crowded with the local people. The train was ever so crowded and it broke down in a dark tunnel. The train was pushed out the tunnel and he was thankful. He found the trains were old and in a poor state. Luckily they have some great engineers. He got the the capital city and over the other side of the river rapids was the capital of the next door country.

The longest time I have waited for a train was in Romania where I waited about 7 hours for a train. Fortunately I wasn't travelling alone and my husband and I were able to chat while we waited. I also carried some books in my bag and I was able to read while I was waiting for the train. I read a lot and I always carry some books and magazines when I travel because it gives me the chance to pass the time in a nice way. In Estonia I also had to wait while a long time for a train, and I was travelling alone at that time so I had to find a different way to pass the time. I had already read my book, but I found an English magazines in a shop. It was quite expensive, but I still bought it because I was so happy to find something in English.

Waiting for DAYS for a train? Wow and wow. That's a long time to wait. I live in the city so I guess I take easy access to transport for granted. But I guess if you live in such a far off area then waiting for transport could take a while. I must admit I do get bored while waiting for most things. Even waiting in line is boring. I remember reading somewhere that an average person spends about 2-3 years of his life waiting in line. And that's quite some time. Imagine what you could accomplish in 2 years, right? Anyway, I'm straying way off topic now. The longest I had to wait for a train was a day. I remember a trip from Venice to Florence and we had to change trains in Bologna. However, the train had some mechanical problems and they decided to cancel the train for the day. We ended up hunting for a hostel in the area and staying there for the night. Thankfully, the train was up and running the following day.

It is always very boring for the waiting time. This is why I often play with my tablet or cellphone during the waiting time. Or sometimes we will take photos in the train station so that the time can go by faster. Or sometimes my son and I will visit every corner of the train station to kill the time. You can't expect that a child can sit down well to wait for the train for a long time.

If I am enough rested it's not a problem. I like that waiting time, I find fascinating to see people traveling and I also can read, drink a coffee etc. If I'm tired and I can't do anything intellectually or phisically, that waiting time it's a horrible burden. And, also, it shouldn't be cold.

I crochet for charity or for my family and friends. I always keep a crochet project in my purse. And so, if I have to wait for a long time, such as in a doctor's waiting room or for a train. I can be doing something for someone else. Last week, I took the train downtown to meet with my husband who works downtown. We went out for dinner at a nice restaurant. I misunderstood him as to the time I was suppose to catch the train and I was sitting at the train station for 45 minutes. That gave me plenty of time to finish a small crochet item I was doing for charity. I felt my wait was worth my while. And hopefully, will indeed benefit someone in need.

I never mind if I have a lengthy wait for a train, because there is always sooo much going on at a train station, people watching, looking at the train maps, listening to people. I always go prepared if I know I am travelling, so I am used to delays, I use the time to read my book, do crosswords or just chill out and listen to my Ipod, so for me it's not time wasted, I optimize the time waiting, it's amazing when you busy yourself the time flies.
