Buying gifts for Christmas, is it necessary?

Hi everyone, Christmas is just around the corner and I believe it is a custom almost everywhere, especially in Western countries, to shop for Christmas gifts. Children especially look forward to unwrapping their gifts, all beautifully packed and placed at the bottom of the Christmas tree. But, is it really necessary to shop for Christmas gifts? What do you think mylotters?

I prefer to give xmas gifts rather then get them. I make trays of cookies and cakes for friends and family. I know they look forward to them each year.

When I worked there were 5 of us in this little shop and this was a while ago...the 90s but I'll never forget. The one girl every Christmas would make us a huge tray of home-made cookies and candies and give one to each of us to take home. Do you know that was one of my favorite of all times Christmas gifts! I loved it and I sure do miss it!

Free homemade Christmas cookies. I sure do like to receive those too. Christmas is about charity...sharing and giving and spreading LOVE.

In all actuality, I don't think that it would really feel like Christmas to me without buying gifts. What I mean to say here is that I see the gifts that we buy for Christmas as being a following of the tradition of the three Wise men bringing gifts to the infant Jesus. Thus, I make a habit of getting Christmas presents for all of my loved ones. If we were to ever have a Christmas without gifts, it just wouldn't feel right to me at all.

No it's not a necessity to buy gifts. I feel that Christmas is mostly for the children because they believe in Santa Claus so obviously you want to buy gifts for them so that have something special to open on Christmas day. But for adults it shouldn't matter if you have gifts or not, just being with family and cooking a nice dinner and hanging out should be the best way to celebrate a holiday. Now for Jehovah witnesses they obviously don't celebrate any holiday so it would be hard for them if some of their family did celebrate it. I only know this because my father dated a lady that was one of those and we celebrated Christmas but she still accepted gifts from us. I think she only did it out of love but not sure. As we get older we grow out of Christmas spirit unless we have children.

Yes, children love to receive Christmas presents. They really look forward to Christmas Day. But some children are just too spoiled...sometimes they even complain if they don't get what they want or what they've been hinting. I think I will not buy presents for children who do not know how to appreciate the hard work and efforts put up by their parents or family members just to get the presents for them.

It is not just buying gifts but the entire planning for the great day is what makes me look forward to it year in and year out. There is so much to do. Sprucing up the house, making sweets, filling the surroundings with xmas carols, doing up the xmas tree, creating a digital xmas card, remembering friends and family, planning a party for orphans.. The Christmas day itself, for me is very boring!!

I think yes most especially when you want to give happiness with your love one. Gifts are token of love and the receiver might be happy if they receive gifts from someone they love. I prioritize my siblings together with my mom in wrapping my gifts. Next is my boyfriend who I love dearly.

I think the idea of giving gifts comes from the Wise Men who brought gifts to baby Jesus. I give three gifts and as the kids get older, one is usually money. We've cut back as we've gotten older also. To us, the most important part is being together with our family and having lots of good food.

Well, no, I don't think it's a necessity, but I LOVE to give gifts and really don't care if I get any in return. I just love doing it. So, I guess it's up to the individual on whether they feel it's necessary or not. I think you can have just as much fun sitting around with family and enjoying their company, as long as you all get along that is, haha. If I was a great baker, I would do something like this and give trays of cookies for gifts, but I'm a terrible baker. And the crafts that I do are not what my family is interested in having in their homes. I make miniature items. So, therefore, I go out and buy for everyone and enjoy myself doing it.

Christmas is a time for sharing and giving. It has been a tradition to most Christians, especially in the western countries to give gifts to their friends and loved ones. But I don't think it is a necessity to buy gifts especially if you do not have the budget. What's important is that you celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and that we love one another. Merry Christmas!

I think this time of financial crisis it is no longer necessary...but if you have extra money, then, I think should go on and share your blessings.

I think it depends on who you are shopping for. If you are looking for teenagers then money will do them just fine. If it is kids. Kids love that stuff.
