I have seen some members posting a link in a discussion. Is it against the guidelines in mylot? What is the difference of posting a link in a discussion and encouraging to see the link on the profile?

Yes,you can give links in discussions, but you have to be very careful for that which link you are going to mention. It must not be a referral link.Just follow the guidelines and you will know which links have to give and which are not. http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx

Largely, Search Engine Optimization (SEO). When you post a link in a discussion, search-engines think that THAT SITE is about the same thing as myLot; and myLot doesn't want to be about anything but myLot (or something ... ask GoAskAlice to be surer). That, and myLot doesn't want to be painted as 'one of those sites where you can share links.' For instance: I linked to a Facebook Cause I really believe in, but--since there was 'referral code' in that link--the discussion I started for it (though I really wanted to discuss possible ways to help the cause, whether people 'joined' or not) was deleted. (Maybe I had a good reason for posting the link, but 'if the system gives me an inch, it risks being broken by the flood of humanity.')

But some members put tags of other sites in a discussions. That could be crawled by search engines.

I guess encouraging or inviting others to see a link on the profile is a bit acceptable than posting a link in a discussion in terms of a referring purpose then both are violation to the guidelines. But there are links exempted to the rule such as link for additional information not a referral link or own site's link.
