How do you format a computer using start-up?

I know I can Google this subject matter however, I’m tired of reading instructional writings that are hard to understand LOL , and YouTube video tutorials only shows formatting using MS-DOS. So the thing is, I have a computer which my Brother-in-law gave, it was from his office and was an old computer (personally I don’t think it is too old because it runs on windows professional) his office was stacking new sets of computers so instead of throwing his desk computer away, he gave it me. Although it was a nice gesture for him to give such gadget, I find it unusable because the computer has a password on it and I can’t access it. I asked him about the password but he forgot the password since their office always change security measures including computer passwords so I am clueless on how to format it because I don’t know the password. Any suggestions and help notes are much appreciated.

So you are amenable to reformatting? Reformat or use it as external drive to reformat.

You can try any of these password recovery tools, check the details and see which one is better for you: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm Re-installing the Windows XP OS is very easy, the options that you get are very easy if you have a bootable Windows XP OS CD. Try for the password recovery tool first, if this doesn't work, I will provide you the steps. Easy and simple

There are a few backdoor entry tricks available for Windows XP, but since the computer was configured by the IT department for a company then access is likely unavailable. It would also be fruitless to gain access since you will want software compatible with home and multimedia use as opposed to a business configuration. Formatting the computer is extremely simple since you will be installing an operating system of your own. Simply boot up the computer from the Windows installation disc, which may require changing the boot rotation in the BIOS, then you will be presented with the option of formatting the drive prior to proceeding. Windows will do the formatting for you.

Just use the Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor. You will have to burn a specially crafted Linux distribution to CD. It will surely work for your XP machine, and it's free. A commercial solution is Spotmau, but this link below is freeware for you, it will do the job of resetting the password of your choice. pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
