for the approval of a genetically modified mosquito. The scientists want to modify mosquitoes to die naturally. The gene in the mosquito will cause the mosquito to self destruct naturally before they even reach maturity and can cause damage to plant life. I can't believe it. What they won't think of. I say don't mess around with mother nature. They never think these things through. Mosquitoes (though they are a nuisance) provide food for a lot of other bug life. I think they are messing with the food chain and they are not thinking through the consequences of messing with this on such a large scale. You can read more about it. http://www.socialmoms.com/green/modern-pest-control-insects-genetically-altered-to-die/ What are your thoughts on this. What could we possibly gain by genetically modifying mosquitoes?

I can actually think of some gains that would be made by genetically modifying mosquitoes, although I have to say that this idea is something that seems somewhat alien to me. The main benefit that I can think of to genetically modifying mosquitoes is that it would eventually mean the end of several diseases that are transmitted through mosquitoes. I really do feel like the world would be a much better place without the risk of all of the diseases that are suffered throughout the world through the transmission of mosquitoes.

It would be nice not to have mosquito bites every summer, but I believe there could be larger implications than eliminating lime disease.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes i completely support u on this, no doubt mosquitoes are the root cause of many diseases but we should not forget the fact that we do not have any right to interfere in the lives of any living species on this earth. This will certainly alter the food chain and hence scientists should come out with something new and less destructive ideas. What say?

I agree with everything you have shared here and your beliefs coincide with mine. I too agree Scientists should come up with some more "less destructive" ways to solve the problem as you have described it.
