Philippines

Philippine Mainstream Television is a diverse TV-media which shows primetime TV-series that meets the Filipino audience, moreover they are targetted on people that has a distinct appeal to TV-dramas. Most likely, such shows are drama-based, comedy-drama based, and sometimes fantasy-drama. Such TV show offerings in primetime Philippine televisions appeal in a way that it can be watch by the Filipino Family. However, since there is a competition between Television ratings, and dubbed to “filipino” foreign soap operas such as Korean-Drama, Chinovelas, and Latin-dramas the TV-soap industry in the Philippines is now leaping to TV Remakes such as Korean Dramas remake in Filipino. How do you find Pinoy Soap Operas that is a remake from foreign soap operas? Do you find it as mimicry of tv-soap? Or do you find it a good television strategy to appeal to its Filipino audience? Please share your thoughts…

I guess with the intense competition between TV networks we resort to making remakes of telenovelas that became a hit in the past. That is seen between the two rival networks trying to outdo each other. Although I do appreciate original stories over the remake since I wanted something fresh and new. I do understand that it is quite difficult to really make an idea out of nowhere and make it a big hit. I think that is the strength of ABS since they are good at making original stories that can become a hit story. GMA is good at remakes since I know it is their forte and in fantaserye kind of shows. But they are not that good in making good stories from scratch.

Yeah I guess the third blooming competition would be TV 5 although they have not yet truly bloomed to really compete with the big two but they are really trying to by pirating some talents from these two big tv networks. Rumors have it that TV 5 is still not in the positive because of these but they are expecting to turn around by early next year.

rsa101: Such a true observation! yes, the network war also stirs up competition in terms of making original, and remake soap operas. not to mention the rising third big network in the country which is tv-5 that will probably boost in the years to come because they have veteran actors and actresses over their nework such the world renowned Nora Aunor. Somehow with this, it results to competition rather putting a more quality drama, because they appeal much on mainstream and what has been known over the years for the Filipino tv-programming.

i also think that abs can create better soap operas than gma 7 that's why gma resort to koreanovela remakes since they got better koreanovelas than abs.

If i'm not mistaken Philippine TV has numerous remakes form a foreign soaps - from Mexican telenovela to Korean drama. Well for me I am not watching these remakes or adaptations since I have watched the original and I have no interest in watching the local remake since it has the same story line. Even "who's who" the stars will do the remake it will not make sense for me. sorry but its not my passion to watched adaptations. I'd rather make my time watching original local drama's.

I prefer the original ones. Better acting and much better story (most of the time).

You got a point there, somehow they do make remakes and some of its audience are fed up with the story line because they know all along what the story is all about judging from the original series itself. Somehow i know Filipino soap creators can do more and can do a better surreal soap however, they are minded by what is appealing to the audience and what could gain them more ratings so, they go to putting a remake.

You can't help but to compare the original and the remake one.

This is why i don't watch Pinoy Soap Operas... i used to... but i noticed the lack of creativity in the story lines... then they started doing those remakes... reboots... etc... i prefer to just watch reality tv shows in ETC or Star World... i think they are more fun...

@aseretdd: Thanks for your response, some Pinoy-Soaps usually has story lines that are too "fictional" in a way, that they are too good to be true, and too drama-like that people know that it won't happen in reality. I also watch ETC and StarWorld because they have reality shows and series that are more hitted in plots related to reality. @iluvusabado: Well, it depends on the TV-network because they don't want to waste their investment on putting a tv-soap that wouldn't appeal to Filipino audience, morever, they like to target a family oriented show rather than putting surreal dramas.

there are foreign franchises that should be remade into a filipino version because we haven't seen them yet and i think the filipino audience deserves to see soap operas that are made from other countries.

I think that the Filipinos do give justice to the remakes that they do. I watch sometimes, and I do enjoy them. The Filipino audience is always hooked to such programs coz it depicts our everyday lives. And somehow, with these programs, we sort of get advice and some helpful insights if we were put in such circumstances.

That is so true! But however, the producers might be after the "pang-masa" (for the masses) which is about 90% being viewed by them. So, stories that we commonly know about from these programs are much more related to them.

somehow true, but is it monotonous to see such soap operas? i mean, we all know the plot already and we had seen it from it's original series such as koreanovelas remake into filipino dramas. I know that there is a much good series that Filipinos can make up, but sad to hear that TV-networks opt to go to what is "mainstream" than putting a more surreal series and is originally filipino made.

True, they more likely to make what is hit for the masses, mainstream and has the appeal in their taste rather than putting a more creative and more surreal plot.

I don't go for this kind of stuff, I like soaps that are original. Even though their viewers know the plot of the story but still it is original

It depends solely on the viewers on what suits their taste in terms of TV-programming. Thanks for your response.

it couldn't be helped. some other broadcasting company from another country are copying other networks program format from different country too. american shows copying crazy japanese contests. japanese animes copying french culture. pinoy TVJ movies with beach dances from bollywood choreography. lists goes on. what i hate about our local prime channels is that they are making their viewers dumber and dumber each time. they only care for money but they can't afford to get quality talents. i was given a chance to work with them, of course i declined. just my opinion though.

Somehow you got a point there, as we are influenced by foreign culture and tv audience prefer a more westernize and foreign approached tv entertainment, local tv networks has no choice but to air an adaptation to what has been a fad in foreign scenes. Thanks for your response.

True, it's annoying that because they are preoccupied in getting revenue for the soap operas their extension makes the story even odd. and makes it more unrealistic.

Ideas are every where. I think in this day, there is no true and one original idea for a tv soap plot. everything is copied from somewhere... everything is like from some place, from where it was first seen, I guess there are many more places or ideas that we all need to see that would give us an idea. Every story could be just a remake, taken from someone's life... its just what everything is about whatever sells probably that is where most twists in the story go! :D

With the vast discrimination of information from a diverse media portal, sometimes we really can't tell originality because one is copying the other. Thanks for your response.

For me, it is entertaining. I also like the remakes of old movies that were made into soaps like Ina, Kapatid, Anak. I love the story. It makes me want to go home early

Thanks for your response, somehow remakes shows us a new breed of actors and actresses that gives another taste from the old films to a soap series.

I really don't mind if they make a remake of the Korean drama show . As long as the story is very good, i watch it. I enjoy watching it because you can compare which one gives justice to the roles. As of now, i enjoy watching the remake of the Temptation of A Wife, a Korean drama show. What i can say is, we got prettier and more good looking actresses and actors than the Korean show.

True, sometimes you give the thought of comparing and contrasting not only the cast but also the twist of the storyline as well. because somehow, they put changes on the story line to meet to the taste of what is so called, "filipino touch" on the soap. Thanks for your response

I'm not interested in them because they are rehashed stories. People who watched the original already knows the ending and only looks for soemtihng different, which may turn out to be not-so different. Frankly, for me, it's just all the hype and some acting jobs for Phil actors.

True, they are copied from a foreign content which is more likely that people will compare them from the original one. Thanks for your response.

Filipinos like to watch soap operas. For me, I seldom watch soap operas. Many Filipinos too like the Korean-drama, that is what I notice. Have a nice day!

In a way, this is the result that they are fed up watching the same plot all over and over again, which they want to see other plots that is visible in foreign soaps.

Most often I feel disappointed with TV remakes especially if I was able to watch the whole episodes of the original one. Recently, I began watching this particular pinoy remake of a koreanovela. I was enjoying the soap at first but later on I became annoyed since they almost changed the whole story of the soap. The story is now becoming very unrealistic and so mushy. I don't know why Filipino directors exaggerate most of the scenes.
