I got accepted into 2 university in Canada

United States

I am so happy lol , I hint on this in a previous discussion but I wanted to get the acceptance first . We will be leaving to Canada for the September term . I am so excited as this will be my first time in Canada . Being international student is so expensive so I planned to work and study . That was one of the reason I take a year off and not pursue another degree in my country because I wanted to consider going over seas to get some international experience .

Canada's a very big place. Which province are you going to? If you are coming from Jamaica, are you coming in the summer? If so, make sure you are prepared for the cold. When you come here in the summer, the fall can be a big shock. I know a young man who came here from Barbados, and he was telling me how cold he found it, and this was only in October!!! I was very concerned for him, cause it isn't cold here in October! At least not from my perspective. This is his second year at our local university, and he is much more comfortable. He knows what to expect and he's ok with it now. But he can go home when he's done, we're still stuck here year round!

I wrote a good long respond and I lost all of it I hope to be there by Aug-Sept , I know it will be cold , that's the one thing my fiance hate about going there . The temperature hair is always hot so I know its a whole new kinda climate. I will have help preparing for the cold , I have family there . I am not sure which providence yet because the schools are located in different ones.

oh that's good, that you have family here. They will have made you aware. We are having a really cold snap here right now, some places -50 celsius, which is pretty severe the best thing is down filled coats to deal with it, light but really really warm what will you be studying?

Congrats! Which universities? I know international tuition can be very expensive about 3 -4 x the amount we pay, but makes sense as international students are taking up the spots from us who are from the country, so they need to pay more as they don't pay taxes to the country whereas we do. Also, remember you cannot legally work in Canada as an international student, they have sometimes jobs on campus for international students but only a handful for the hundreds of international students.

You can work legally if you apply for a work permit , after 6 months in the country but you have to be doing at least a 2 year course . University of Saskatchewan and the University of Waterloo .

Nice move you can do it as long as you have the will to do it. Mixed culture is very advisable today our earth getting smaller let us be aware of another classroom what is the different? and what to learn?

Wow that's amazing lol! I've thought about studying abroad, but I never have the courage to make the choice! It's a fantastic opportunity for one to experience exotic scenery, habits, people, etc. It's also good for one's mental and academic development! My classmates bacome very independent and industrious after going abroad, and I'm very proud of them. So I hope you can seize the chance and make the best of it lol!

Wow congratulation it is not easy to be accepted in two schools and yet it's outside your country. My daughter is going to college too and she still don't have plans where to take it. Well good luck and have a nice future ahead.

I know its hard , I used an local representative of the school here that make the process easier . You and your daughter take your time, think and make suggestion about what school to choose .

That would be a great opportunity for you and your family in the future. Several of Filipinos studied and work in Canada. It's very hard to apply for having student visa. In your case, wow! how I wish I can work and live in Canada.

Well getting the Visa is the other half but once you have all the necessary documents I thin it should go just fine . I know only one other person that is doing her bachelor there also .

That's very courageous of you, silverfox09. That's a great opportunity for you to be studying in another country. It's something that was suggested to me before but I don't really like the thought of furthering my studies or proceeding to get my Masters.

Yes, being an international student can be expensive. There is often limited funding for international students as well. There can be significant additional living expenses for international students (i.e., needing a new wardrobe due to going to a significantly colder country), and you will also lack the sort of community connections that you may have had in your home country--which may also lead you to end up spending more money. Hopefully, you have done your research regarding the area in which you will be studying and living during the next several years. I remember international students at my undergrad college who really did not know what they were getting themselves into when they chose to come to the U.S.

I have done my whole research for a entire year , I think about it and I talk to may family there for more local information . It is quite expensive because your school tuition is like double and tipple . I also check the rent amount for small apartment , its kinda similar to the rent I pay here so not really worrying. Those wont be the problem I will just have to be sure not to fail anything because it cost so much the first time .

Well, I'm happy for you, and for me the most sincere wishes for a happy stay in Canada. And above all, you get 100% in your goal to study and work. I suppose I believe that in the beginning you will find a little hard, the environment, labor, etc., but I'm sure you get used to it and you will succeed in the best way. After all, if you have accepted, it means that place you deserve it!
