Would John Connor Have Saved Kyle Reese if He Didn't Know Kyle Would Be His Dad?

In TERMINATOR SALVATION, Kyle Reese is just some kid who survived Judgement Day and who was at the top of SkyNet's kill-list (above even John Connor!)
The reason Connor counter-manded orders to go & infiltrate a main facility of SkyNet (rather than having The Resistance just blow the whole thing to kingdom-come, with Kyle Reese as one of the SkyNet-utilities' captives) is the tape his mother made about Kyle Reese coming from the future and becoming his father.
Would John Connor have taken that risk-of-insubordination & saved Kyle if his mother had not made that tape?

The plot dictated that he had to rescue his younger father.
The Grandfather paradox would not allow any other action.
If I had more time, I would explain why the whole plot line of the Terminator franchise does not work.
