A Japanese Valentine

Valentine's Day is the day of the year when Japanese girls give chocolates to guys. But giving chocolates is not limited to those in a relationship. They give chocolates for different reasons. One reason and the most obvious is to show their love for the boy. It could be a girl giving a chocolate to her boyfriend, or a spouse to her husband. But it can also be a form of confession. The most common is the chocolate of gratitude. That is when a girl gives chocolate to his male friends. And there is what they call a required chocolate. Usually girls in the same class give chocolates to their male classmates, same goes at the workplace. Valentine's day is already over but I can still see people waiting in the line to buy chocolates, and I have still received some up until now. Valentine's day here in Japan I can say is very commercialized and well-celebrated but I am thankful that they have this kind of tradition-- girls giving boys chocolates. This way, girls could show their love, gratitude, or what-have-they to the male race. And boys getting the chance to just receive whatever is given, and be appreciated. So I can say, Valentine's Day in Japan is A Male Thanksgiving Day. Hahaha. In return, a month after February 14, they have this White Day, guys turn to give chocolates to the girls, which I believe is just fair.

If you have some female friends here in Japan and you are also here, there really is a big chance that you would receive some. With regards to the other days of the year, if you have a girlfriend then maybe you can expect something like that.

I thought only Korean do this. Thanks for sharing this discussion. Now I know that Japanese women or girls also give chocolates to men or boys on Valentine's day and that you also have your "White Day." I hope you received a lot of chocolates yesterday. :)

Yes. Korean women or girls usually give chocolates to their husbands or boyfriends or to the men or boys they like. In my country it's the opposite or we can give one another some chocolates. Some men give flowers with chocolates, some with stuffed toys, etc.

So Koreans also has this kind of culture? I didn't know about that. And also, some give stuff other than chocolates. But more of chocolates, cakes, sweets. What you see in anime, manga, and Japanese drama are actually happening here in Japan. So when I learned about this, I was really pleasantly surprised.

This is one of Japan's tradition that I find so cute and exciting. I even learned that most girls prefer to make chocolates themselves instead of buying the heart shaped ones from stores and shops. It must be really great to be a boy during Valentine's Day in japan.

Well, some girls prefer making their own chocolates. As I said, Valentines here is not only about romance but a show of thanksgiving. Girls make chocolate for other girls (friends), too.

Receive a chocolate which is made by someone which is special to us is different than a chocolate we buy at shop. For me it is very special gift.
