birthing puppies..

chihuahua - rosie and her babies

My Chihuahua Rosie, had puppies just before Christmas. It is part of the reason I haven’t really been mylotting as I have had my hands full. She gave birth to a little grey/brown boy, who was 3 times bigger than any of the other pups. He was the first born, and unfortunately he didn’t make it. He was so big that when she was pushing him out, the sack surrounded him burst and he drowned before we were able to get him out. It was very sad. She then gave birth to a little black and grey boy, black grey and white boy, and a little peachy white girl. It was insane! I was there for the birth and seen it all happening. And believe it or not, not that I think I COULD love my dog anymore, I have an even softer spot for her now! Has anyone ever been through their dog giving birth? How did you cope with it?? What do you think of this?

When you were telling me the story of the dog giving birth I hadn't realised it was so recent. Congratulations! Have you found homes for them yet? Each time we've had puppies I've been there. Each time the birth itself has gone well but sadly we once had one where the puppy was not put together right and although it was born alive it's intestines were on the outside. I killed it immediately which was a horrible thing to have to do but there was no way it could have survived. And you know of my recent goat birthing experiences!

Oh my goodness that is horrific! But you did do the right thing obviously, I mean you don't need me to tell you that, I'm sure your conscience can tell you it was the right thing! That is so sad for that little pup. I have heard of horror stories like that, but I didn't know if it was really possible as I had not met anyone that had been through it. Was there a hole in the stomach, or how was it possible that the intenstines were on the outside? I actually gave the white female to my friend. She is a breeder, and actually bred Rosie, my chihuahua. When I got Rosie from her we stayed in touch. So she wanted a little pup, as her dog (Rosie's mum) isn't as mobile as she used to be, so I let her have first pick and she wanted the white one (all her chihahua's have been dark) and the little boys we are keeping :)

You know, I really don't know how the puppy was put together as once I looked I really didn't want to investigate further. It was really sad. When it was first born everything was clean, obviously. but the inside bits that were on the outside were sticky and they got stuff stuck to them straight away and it was just a mess. Sorry, that was a bit graphic for tea time!

Aw, congrats on the birth of the pups! My two female dogs have had pups and the very first time I was a wreck! Lol I was crying and scared for her and then thought they were getting hurt when she was getting the sacks off! By the last litter, I was more relaxed and I totally agree that when you have watched them give birth and watch them grow, it makes you love them even more and the pups, well watching them grow is amazing isn't it! I am guessing tey are nearly or just about 8 weeks now so they are fully walking and everything!

The mother and puppies are adorable. I bet she was worn out. Are you going to keep them? I've had dogs and cats all of my adult life. Have 'assisted' with several of their birthings. It's just amazing.

well the little white female, I gave to my friend. She is actually the breeder who bred my chihuahua Rosie, and who I got Rosie from, so we have stayed friends, and I gave her the little white pup :)

I never had a female dog. My mother never wanted one because she didn't want to have lots of puppies at home. My male dogs were neutered before I adopted them as part of the adoption contract. But I had witnessed a dog giving birth. It was my aunt's dog. I've also seen a pig giving birth and I enjoyed watching it and even helped in cleaning up the piglets. It's amazing.

oh I would loveeee to see piglets being born! I have never seen a piglet in real life, but I would love to! They look so cute! How is your lovely wee dog?
