I happened to a sentence which I cant figure it out,and the sentence is like this"a player who is seldom brought to a game, but usually just sits on a bench off to the side watching the more important players". So what does the"off to the side"mean?

In many games teams are allowed 'reserve players' - extra team members who can be brought in as replacements if someone is injured, becomes tired or is sent off. "Off to the side" means, literally, 'sitting at the side of the pitch'. "Off side" (without the 'to') means something quite different. It is a situation in a game (football, hockey and other similar goal sports) where a player is in an illegal position near the opponents goal. The expression 'to the side' or 'to one side' is a common idiom and is used to mean, either literally or figuratively, that something is not in the main view. 'On the side' is another idiom with a slightly different meaning. When used about earnings or work, it means that a person is being paid something more slightly illegally or is doing another job beside his main one. It can also be used to refer to relationships or 'love interests' to mean that someone has a clandestine lover besides his regular wife/girlfriend. In American English, 'on the side' can mean extra food served with the main meal - "A hamburger with fries and a coke on the side" usually means a hamburger (generally in a bread roll and with the usual salad and sauces) with a serving of fries either literally on the side of the plate or (more often) in a separate container and a drink of cola (in a cup, can or bottle, obviously!).

"sits on a bench off to the side " - the bench are all on the side of the game field or court. I guess this is just as literal as it gets. Hello narsha! happy mylotting!
