What to do about links that don't open right?

As in the ones that when you click them, they give a 404 error code? Should I send them a message and ask them to post their discussion again?

If you need to see the link before you can respond to the discussion, it's SPAM. Otherwise, go ahead and say in your reply (along with your response) that the link is bad.

Huh? I'm not sure what you mean. There is no discussion here that can be replied to without first opening the link to the discussion.
