If you want something as powerful as Photoshop, then you can use Gimp (which is free and available for Windows, Linux and, I believe, Mac). It is not particularly easy to learn but probably no harder than Photoshop. There are plenty of excellent tutorials for Gimp - just search for 'gimp tutorial'. If all you want are some of the more basic, day-to-day functions, you could choose from many free packages which I'm sure you'd find more than adequate. I use IrfanView for things like minor optimizations, cropping and resizing and, for more complex editing, I find Paint.Net a very good and easy to use alternative which has a layers capability and many filters. Both of the above are freeware. http://www.irfanview.com/ http://www.getpaint.net/

For some reason, MyLot didn't turn the Paint.Net URL into a link:
Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows.

IrfanView can be found here: Note that you may need to download a separate package of filters to get the full functionality.

In this 50 minute VIDEO tutorial, we will start with an unretouched portrait of a girl, a photo anyone can take at home with their camera and transform it into some sort of fantasy character. We will go through every step I took to get the final result, from working on the skin, color grading, lighting and finishing with the background.
