We Are to Be BROKEN before the Throne? What about 'approaching the throne with boldness?'

Pastor today told us that God wants us to be 'broken' when we come before the throne of God, that God DOESN'T want us to exhibit boisterous boldness when in His holy presence.
Why then do I seem to remember plenty of references to the idea that we should be able to 'approach the throne of Our Father with ALL boldness'? (I looked it up at BibleGateway, but couldn't find anything (in the KJV) about 'approaching the throne' except in Revelation when the angels, elders & saints etc. fell on their faces before the throne!)
Once we've been baptized with fire, shouldn't we have 'earned' a little space for boldness in the throne-room (I know you can't 'earn' God's respect, but I'm asking Doesn't the fire GIVE us a little respectability?)?
