Just by chance while out photographing stuff in the yard, I found this acorn with a baby Earthsnake in it. It was one of the smallest snakes I have caught and just lucky that I saw it in the acorn.

So when it comes to the smallest one that you have seen, this is it in a nutshell as the old phrase suggests.

Okay, that's an awesome find. I was going to ask if you had any other pictures that showed its head, but then I reloaded the page and saw that you'd posted the other. Love it!

These snakes only get about 8 inches at the max. We find them all the time in leaves and under rocks in the yard. They don't bite and even if they tried they could never open wide enough to bite a human. I'm told they eat ants, termites and other small insect like baby crickets. They come in two species, Smooth and Rough Earthsnakes. The smooth ones have smooth scales, the Rough Earthsnake has scales that are keeled like the keel on a boat. Other than that they are almost indistinguishable.

@loki1982 Around here, I think the smallest snakes we have are coral snakes. I usually see more bull snakes than anything else, although there are a few different species of rattlesnake around here. Have you ever seen the "manly" wildflower photograph? The photographer was surprised by a mojave green rattler while shooting wildflowers... it's one of my favorites.

@loki1982 I take back what I said earlier. If that's what they eat, then they're welcome around here.

I'm not too fond of snakes but the photo is amazing. I've never seen anything quite like it.

@loki1982 Well I'm glad you got it. I often miss those special shots because I don't react quickly enough or can't get my camera out in time.

Very cool photo, the snake is tiny! No snakes in the wild here, St. Patrick reputedly banished them from the Emerald Isle of Ireland.

Lucky you to be free of snakes! As I saw the photo my heart stopped, I have a snake phobia, even the smallest makes me sick.

@pgntwo No! I do not even want to look at this tiny snake. It's even worse than a big one, it can hide anywhere.

Is this the same as a garter snake? They are great for the garden and will eat slugs, woohoo!
