Singing at work!

There is a guy at the office who sings when he is working. His office is next to mine and sometimes I can hear him sing when it is quiet and everyone else is working silently. I think he must be wearing headphones and doesn't realize that his voice is loud. He is a partner in the company so I am not sure if I should bring it up that we can hear his singing. Maybe he already knows and he still does it to help him with stress. Would you discuss it if you were in my place?

Not if he's in a prestigious position like you say he is. I wouldn't want to risk the wrath - or his embarrassment if he didn't realize it. My boss sings all the time. He asked me once if he could sing and I said "Sir I don't like to lie to my bosses."

Haha.. I know what you mean. He doesn't have a good voice either. I don't think it's appropriate to make a comment about his singing at the moment. I am wondering why no one else has told him that his singing is loud.

@besweet Probably for the same reason as you. It's just not safe to make a comment like that to someone in his position!

@ScribbledAdNauseum haha.. You are right! He seems like a cool guy in general, but I don't know his boundaries.

Why not jokingly say to him, hey I ilke your singing - that might make him aware of it.

Hi Val! Well, that can be risky. He might just start singing louder if he already knows!

@valmnz I wanted to cry when the new girl that they hired recently started singing two days ago. I hope they don't start supporting each other.

@besweet ha, ha, and then you could tell him to shut up as others have work to do

May be it can be handled diplomatically. Over to you to face the challenge. (lol). I would not like it one bit - imagine listening to some singing which does not give me happiness

I realized that there are other people singing at work as well. They hired a new girl who is temporarily placed in my office and sometimes we listen to music on her laptop. On Friday she started singing the lyrics a song that was on the radio but she has a very good voice and stopped after the song ended.

I wouldn't say anything as he's partner in the company. I'd just somehow deal with it, Are you allowed to listen to earplugs for music also or would that be unprofessional?

@besweet Yes makes sense - I didn't know what kind of field you worked in. After a while, you may just get used to him singing.

@infatuatedbby It's a small office so I have to do some extras in addition to my actual job, it's an engineering office. I was getting used to it and then he left for a project in another city so he will be away for a while!

Unfortunately only the partners can do that! I need to have good sense of the office while I am working in case I must to take some calls or my boss requests something!

That's a very difficult situation since he is a partner in the company. I guess it would depend on whether you have a good relationship with him.

We have a good relationship but I respect his position and I wouldn't want it to become akward. He is away in a business trip and it's so calm and quiet in the office! I think he will be back next week so I have time to think.

There are ways to let him know you hear hi without hurting his feelings. You can comment on a son he is singing, compliment him on his voice then for sure he will know he is being loud. Then again he probably knows and don't care

This sounds like a very strick policy! They are more understanding in this office but I think it would cause some dislike!

As long as he is a good singer and not a bad singer. I would leave him alone.

Delicate situation, I don't know if I would have the "guts" to tell him.

He is a kind person and I didn't want him to feel insulted. I don't hear his singing any more because he is away for a new project.

I think you should tell him that all the other workers can hear him singing. It is possible he does not realize how loud he sings.

He has a bad singing voice and I can hear him every few minutes but I can't recognize the songs. I am not sure if he knows that others can hear him from the next door offices. It was funny at first because I was trying to find out what was this strange sound coming from his office.

I personally can't stand it when people do that at the workplace (thankfully now I don't have to deal with that problem anymore), it can be a distraction if they sing too loudly. Maybe you can bring it up in a humorous manner so he wouldn't take it too personally?

I don't feel annoyed when the doors are closed. My boss had made a joke about it once but he didn't seem to understand it. Maybe I can make a comment to my boss and let him handle it, I don't know if it's appropriate to bring it up to him directly.

@cahaya1983 He is not around in the office every day but it happens when he is working on his computer. Most of the time he has appointments and fortunately he isn't singing when the clients are in the office. I am getting used to it and if I keep the door closed it is easier to concentrate.

@besweet It it happens too often and you find it to be a distraction then maybe you should consider that?

Maybe in a nice way I'd say something like "hey, I like that song you were singing" and if he says thanks then you know he knows he can be heard. If he looks confused then he might get the point that his singing is loud enough for others to hear

I am still thinking about it, it's a good idea to make a comment if I pass in front of his office while he is singing. Hopefully it won't be akward.

How about a comment like "You sure seem to be enjoying that music" and see if he reacts. I would probably have to kill him if he did it near me but I guess I'd just keep getting up and shutting the door.

I'm keeping the door closed when he starts singing, It's not continuous, he sings a few lyrics and then stops for a while. I have been taken aback a couple of times, I am getting used to it now.

@besweet My elderly neighbour whistles in his garden and it drives me potty. I'm horribly noise sensitive.

I am lucky to have avoided this akward conversation,, he is a happy person and I wouldn' t like to make him feel bad about his singing. Fortunately he won't work in the office for a few months!

I like singing when I am working at home sometimes. But I don't do it at the office, I think it would be annoying for everyone since my singing voice is bad. Do you work in a big office?

No. I would enjoy his singing, unless it was too bad. :) I used to work alone at times in the office, late in the nights, and when you are working so late, all alone, you tend to hear sounds that are innocuous but start working on your psychology, is it a ghost, or thief ..like. So the best solution was start singing. :) It helped. :)

It's really bad, I can't even recognize the lyrics sometimes. I am the last one to leave from the office when I work on weekends and it's scary to stay alone in the whole floor. I haven't tried singing yet but I think that some music would help.
