A bargain for Hindus insisting on beef ban

Ok..let every Hindu woman wear burkha and remove that "bindi" (dot on forehead) then if you all genuinely want to save those cows, this is an innocuous way to do it, right? You restrict what Muslims want to eat, they get to impose a condition on our women's clothing. Give and take system. Would that go down well with Hindus?

Muslims don't eat pork, so you should better not eat pork to respect Muslims. Jews also don't eat pork, and a few other animals among them ostriches, so you should also forbid ostrich meat to respect Jews. Christians don't eat horses, so... At the end, you will perhaps have chickens and rabbits left to eat, if there is not a religion forbidding to eat them. Don't you think that the way to go is to tolerate the food habits of others instead of wanting to ban some ?

Oh I agree with you. I am a vegetarian and given a choice I would not kill nor serve in my home. But if a friend of mine ate it, and it was not against the law of the land, why should I get worked up about it? The problem is people are getting worked up about this because Hindus consider the cow sacred. But the act is targeted specifically against Muslims in the country, a provocation sort of. They don't say we don't mind Christians staying in the country but they can't eat beef. Of course, pork should also be banned simultaneously. But they are not doing that on purpose. This is what is called Hindu fanaticism. Sometimes I am ashamed to call myself a Hindu because of their behavior.

@vandana7 Do this ban has a chance to be voted or is it just something stupid that will be put into the trash bin of your Parliament ? You see, voting something like this would be populism, and I don't respect any populist politician. I am together afraid and distressed when I read what some of them are saying in my country about Muslims : they are flattering the lower instincts of the crowd and they just deserve contempt.

@topffer ..no chance for the moderate Hindus to vote some stupidity that is being imposed after the party has been voted to power. Please please avoid appeasements of all sorts be it Hindus or Muslims or whichever religion. We are grappling with fanaticism all the way. I have time and again mentioned that Hindu fanatics are as bad as the Muslim fanatics. You are just seeing example of one.

I am convinced that our life would be a lot better if people were more tolerant and there were no bans.

I can understand the ban of beef in your country since it is regarded as a sacred animal. As for the Muslims, I am sure they have enough choices when they can choose chicken, lamb, fish and various seafood for meat protein in their diet. However, I hope that your government will do more to protect the women to prevent heinous crimes from happening on women. I feel sad when I see from the news and documentaries just how harsh the conditions can be for women in your country.

No..we are not a Hindu nation. We are Indians. We have Hindus, muslims, sikhs, and Christians, and buddhists, and jains, and jews, and atheists. We are definitely not Hindu nation unlike the Muslim nations in the middle east, or even in our neighborhood. So imposing a rule on food that hurts others is bad in taste, even for Hindus. I can't look at my muslim friends in eye and tell them whatever is happening is right and fair. The constitution did not say we are Hindu nation and that beef should be banned. You are talking of women, yesterday a two and a half year old girl was raped. My neighbor has a girl who is under two and I fear for her.

@artemeis ..that criminal is not Muslim. But nobody is feeling anything about it with as much intensity, is it? Wrong priorities if you ask me. I agree rapes happen everywhere, but if law is strengthened, and punishment made more severe, things will get better for everybody. As to Dubai, I am sure in India too public display of affections is not allowed. Though punishment is not as severe as there. But that is a country that is completely muslim. They have a right to govern based on a religion and if and when we go there, it is incumbent on us to behave like them I suppose. Unlike them, we in India are a mix of varied cultures and religions. We need to give respect and get respect. Our folks are so stupid that they even differentiate based on race language accent and what have you.

@artemeis ..I am not sure what we can do in this country where women are also unwilling to come up with laws that will help them and future generations. As to Dubai and soliciting, I have had a few nasty comments about Indian men soliciting when they ask for dowries, and their mothers pimping them bringing to the table their considerable experience in the profession. Merely because society accepts one form of soliciting and not the other form does not really condone the other form. I know you will be shocked at that statement but I think dowry is the major reason for baby girls being killed, and disparity in male and female ratio in this country which is leading to a spate of rapes. If one can be curtailed, other problems will automatically start disappearing.

It was all peaceful until someone divided India into two and ever since the people who were trained with the divide and rule under the British came to power. And unfortunately, just as they still teach history at schools, these lessons have continued to survive... and worst, these lessons are still powerful... because our brains are so under developed

I think that animals were put on earth to help us survive. I think that what you eat is a personal choice and not the dictate of others!

Oops..actually, this would not be acceptable to Hindus. So they would retrace their steps of banning beef. That was the idea. :)

I strongly disagree with the "Oh God, you made these animals so I could eat them" thought. What would you say about it... Are you okay if both beef and pork are banned ( I wonder what crime did ham commit to be kept out...) ? And mainly... what is the basis of comparison between beef and pork? Would have gone on a collision course... but myLot is supposed to be a goody goody place I don't seem to see eye to eye with all those I love here...

@vandana7 Do we extend this courtesy to riyasats too, for their land was also taken forcefully. If they still are not living in a pocket, I think we do have a right to say. So do they. As for personal choice...well you have not answered most of my queries :) Someone molesting a girl...not my sin. Let's play three monkeys

@hora_fugit ..molesting a girl is a sin across all religions across all countries and across all non-believers so you can say that is considered as a sin by humanity. But not eating beef ...Hindus and Jains only. I don't know about buddhists or sikhs. But Christianity and Islam and Jewish religions are ok with it. You can choose to fight all the three based on your beliefs, or learn to accept them as different and move on.

I am for live and let live. If they eat what they eat, I have no say in it, unless I am willing to take on their responsibilities including financial maintenance. That is point one. Point two, they had pockets of land of their own when British gave us independence, kingdoms, that were part of the agreement at the time of independence. We took it by force saying it is threat to the nation, which it well was. There is enough heartburn there. They were supporting other muslims because of the stories of partition, which is exactly what Hindus are doing even now. So now, after taking away their kingdoms, for whatever reasons, do we have a right to say they should not eat this or they should eat this? It is their personal choice, their gods are going to judge them. Their sins are not my sins. I won't be punished for those for sure. Not that I declare it to be sin.
