It seems in the Philippines senior citizens are really respected and have even festivities honoring them. Here it makes me sad as when we become any sort of problem to our adult children we are quickly shunted into a retrement center with assisted living or worst of all a nursing home. For me I just had to come here because my son was out of money and a job and i had just retired so had no more pay checks and he was laid off. but others are here because their adult kids want no responsibility towards mom and dad now that they are old and wrinkled and have some health problems so stick ithem in a retirement center. They forget we are the parents who bore them nursed them took care of them til they were grown. Nobody ever asked me if I really wanted to be here loll

This trend is widely becoming popular.I have seen many children doing this with their parents.I never sent my parents to old age homes. Now I and my husband are old ourselves. We are living here in our house and we have our youngest son with us.

I have 5 adult kids. imagine how I feel. just like you and they do. most societies are not as selfish as ours.

hi@bunnybon7 our society is very selfish and will in a flash put mom or dad in a retirement center or worse nursing home rather than keep them in their own homes and I feel thats s wrong.

that is quite sad.. so you are in a "home for the aged"? if it was up to me, i'd never put my parents there though, they may become really sad and feel abandoned.. although other just do not have a choice

He was hopeful he wo uld get another good job but instead he was out of work for a year, got a low paying job so he could not do anything but get section 8 help for a one bedroom a p t for himself. yeah American's don't have the respect for the eldars, and it's sad. I have told my gram she can move in with us, we'd love to have her and have the space, but she has so far refused and stayed in her old home. We worry, but can't make her move. she is in her 90s and should NOT be alone, but my mom and aunt can't get on the same page. mom wants to let her be, my aunt wants to pull her out. I side with my aunt, but what do you do, I don't have the power in this situation.

@Hatley I know she doesn't have much longer to live, and I want it to be safe and here, rather than lonely and there

Happily, SOME Americans I know do move in with a Grandma unit downstairs. But it's common here to neglect elders.

Wow that is so sad. I would never do this to my grandparents or my parents. I took one of my grandmothers out of such a place and put her back in her own home. My other grandma wanted to go there and she checked herself in. Here on the islands I'm so happy there isn't such a place like that here. We take care of our family until they are gone.

hi@poehere that is wonderful indeed glad you all have that mindset here in the U S a lot of us oldsers end up in these c enters. i do not blame my son as he was broke, out of worik, hoimeles and he put me here because he felt i needed care for my diabetes and he thought he wo uld get a job soon and he wo uld bring me vack to a two bedroom apt but it took a long time efore he got a jobe then it did not pay well and he just cou ld not afford a two bedroom apt so Im here yet but I do not hold him to blame at all. He does come see me weekly and my best friend Nelda also comes and we go out shopping. but others end up here and are then forgotten
