Asda Says Bye Bye Black Friday: I Say Hooray!

British supermarket giant Asda has announced that they will not be hosting a Black Friday event this year. This is good news to me. In recent years, UK shoppers have tried to emulate their American cousins, following the introduction of the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday bargain feed frenzy that signals the start of the Christmas shopping season. And, in keeping with the stateside scramble seen on TV, Brits battered, bullied and bruised their way to bargains. It was not a pretty sight. Of course, while Asda have pulled out of Black Friday, other retail outlets will continue with it, so I expect to see news footage of bloodied shoppers and broken goods. On this side of the pond, we have taken Trick or Treat to our hearts. Many of us stay up late to watch the Superbowl, and our children may now go to the prom rather than a school-leavers' disco. These imports are all fine, but Black Friday is one American custom I'd like to see returned to sender. What do you think of Black Friday?

It's wear the shops over huge discounts for just the one day on the Friday after Thanksgiving in America they brought it to the UK (even though we don't have Thanksgiving). People ended up fighting over special offers and cheap electricals it was mayhem. Not a good thing at all x

@birjudanak because of the way people behave, people will fight and argue and push each other out of the way just to save money. It brings out the worst in people x

I've never liked Black Friday and refuse to participate. I think it might help some who depend on the specials of the day to give their children a nice Christmas but I can't be bothered to deal with the crowds. When my children were small there was no Black Friday, it was a holiday.

I hate the obsession with sales at stores and the kind of people who camp outside stores hoping to be first in for the bargains is crazy

I am quite a big fan of shopping on black friday! You will have so less in your pockets & end up taking back home more than a handful of things. Its sad that ASDA wont run offers on this day!

Hooray indeed, the scene in ASDA last year were disgusting and made me ashamed to be british, there is something seriously wrong with people willing to fight over buying a cheap TV. People have totally forgotten the point of Christmas which is spending time with loved ones not buying as much rubbish as you can x

I share your opinions on this and would certainly not have been participating in any Black Friday scramble anyway. As you state, last year the media was flooded with such disgraceful behaviour all for the sake of trying to acquire a bargain. I did not even feel sympathy for those hurt and bruised during the rampage, after all they were there for the same reason.

It's savage! And to be honest, an absolutely ludicrous 'tradition'.

I've never participated in it because it can be so dangerous. But this year is the exception because I'm in desperate need of a new computer. So rather than go to the stores, I'll partake in Cyber Monday. Much safer.

To be honest I'm so far out of the loop I don't know if we even have it in Australia. Probably we do. We have most other traditions, mostly imported.

I think this is just another thing that we do not need.
