Customs that women need to run away from

In most African traditions women were taught to maintain their families. If anything happened it was mostly their fault. More so if separation happened the woman was some sort of an outcast as she was thought not good enough to maintain her family. It was those times when a woman's say was not much to go by. Even when she was beaten she had to keep trying to keep the family together. This has slowly by slowly faded away but there is still something about it that is yet to be eroded. When a woman gets married whether traditionally or in church they strive hard to keep the family together. Even when the worse comes to worse they still stay. This has made jobless women unable to move away from hopeless marriages. They always think the kids will have a better life there but in real sense all end up suffering. I think it is time to think otherwise

I couldn't agree with you more. But it will take a lot of time and effort because these customs are ingrained in women from the time they are born.

@Missmwngi Things like this make me really sad, living in the U.S. where woman can do just about anything they want.

You can say that again and to make matters worse it is not something that is being worked on

Happens here in the rural and semi-urban India too!! Women just need to break free of the taboos!! Till women dont unite, nothing will happen

And they need to stop blaming themselves for certain things that they don't have control over, when a marriage is not working it is not their faults

@Missmwngi Yes, and in most cases it is the mother in law which blames and defames the bride which is actually sad!!

@Rationalwriter That is another thing that surprises me. Why do they even interfere with marriages instead of letting the two deal with it

Those long maintained customs take a long time to break.

@Missmwngi perhaps it will happen faster than you expect as girls get educated and cell phones are close to hand and TV opens up another world for girls.

Even in here there are many customs that are yet been followed. i think only education is the key to kill all these bad customs. Dont you think?

I love watching from the distance as cultures give more freedom to women.

@Missmwngi True, but hopefully it brings them the strength to find independence away from the evil men in their lives.

In Western countries years ago, there was a stigma to leaving your husband. It really was the last resort. But sometimes it is best for all if a clean break is made.

The problem here is the society still blaming the women for the problems and expecting her to still keep a marriage intact despite what

@JudyEv Sure. The pace to change is slow and we can only hope, pray and wait. I guess what matters is that something is being done

People hold tight to tradition under any circumstances. It happens here in my country too where married women have to endure bad treatments from their husbands for the sake of their children.

Abusive marriages are truly unhealthy places for children to grow up.. However, some traditions change very slowly.
