Is your mind blown by how MyLot connects people from so many countries?

I'm absolutely in LOVE with it! Here I am, making my discussions, dooty doot doo.. and then I get responses from India, the Philippines, Italy, and more! I know that in the age of the World Wide Web it's not so surprising to get responses from all over the world - that's kinda the point! However, MyLot is a bit different to me. It seems more personal? I can't quite put my finger on it. MyLot kind've reminds me of the site The Experience Project, where you can post about your life/experiences anonymously. It creates a group of people who are, all at once, very close knit while being thousands of miles away from each other. It's an interesting thing to witness, because it's much more personal than say Twitter. My point is that within a few minutes of posting a discussion, I get worldviews on my chosen topic from people speaking about themselves. HOW COOL IS THAT? *cough not a sociology major cough* I just love learning about people and seeing the world through their eyes - it gives me such a broader view of this crazy thing called life!

@chelseaearnsmore So, what part of the US are you in? I'm in Florida. I met another friend several days ago up in Minneapolis.

@moffittjc I actually just moved from MA to NY, and the change has been great! I do miss the fall colors of MA, but there's soooooo much to do near/in NYC! :) Plus all the food is beyond delicious, I'm in love with a Jewish bakery that sells barokkas (cheese filled pastry) nearby!

MyLot does have a larger non-US population than most sites. In fact, I think that the US members are quite in the minority. It makes you aware that your discussions really need to address everyone and in looking for those subjects common to all, you find out a lot about the world.

Perfectly said about being aware and finding commonality! It's a nice change, too, to have the US be in the minority. I think it creates a totally different atmosphere than most other sites (I, at least) frequent.

It's simply a great way of expanding your mind and life, as we know it through other eyes, with virtually no one behind borders

Thank you, my dear @chelseaearnsmore ! The Philippines is really a beautiful country. We just have some politicians & selfish people who make it look bad.

Why thank you, @KnehKnah! I've only ever seen pictures of the Philippines, but it is quite beautiful! :)

Fingers crossed! Haha. I'm hopeful that with the nice community I'm finding MyLot to have, that the site admin will maintain its good standards. However, I'm so new to all of it, who knows?

It also makes me wonder, what are the most represented countries on MyLot? The least? As a sociology major I always wonder what the prevalence of things are, and how it got to be like that!

It is good and interesting to read true personal stories from other cultures without the censure of the inner media. Sometimes what we hear on the news is not quite true or acurate. Here you can really know what is happening in another country. Though people can censure themeselves in here too.

Yeah, I never watch the news anymore because I figure it's all just what they want you to hear (in their perspective) rather than report on what's important and be unbiased. You're right people can always censor themselves, definitely, but I think the internet makes it easier for people to open up since it's so anonymous.

I have learnt so much about how the 'ordinary' or 'normal' citizen functions in different countries. This is sometimes very different information from what appears in magazines and newspapers.

Totally! What we see and hear on the news (especially in the US, not sure how bad the media discrepancy is in Australia) may be very different from what real people in those places are experiencing! It's nice to get "the real scoop" from those who really know.

Hearing from others in different cultures is one of my favorite aspects of the internet! There's so much you can learn from people, you just need to ask and then listen. :)

I'm a soppy wet bag when it comes to confrontation, so being PC comes pretty easily to me - if you don't upset anyone ever, then they can't get angry at you for something. Not the best way to live life, though lol.

That's one of the things that make this site interesting. I use Facebook mainly to keep in touch with family and friends, so it's nice to have another platofrm to interact with people from all over the world that I'd probably never get to meet in real life.

Same here - Facebook I use for "real life" family/friends and "the rest of the internet" for finding friends all over the world :) I think I've found a true gem in MyLot, no lie.
