This mouse had to go!

One of the husbandly duties I particularly dislike is setting out mouse traps. In our neck of the woods, we can expect a steady stream of rodent visitors to our house as cold weather approaches. I understand that mice, like everyone else, want to get in out of the cold. But our house is not the place. Actually, I like animals, and I think the field mice that come to visit are cute. But they are also dirty and destructive. We knew we had one of them in the house over the last couple of days because he left his calling cards all through our silverware drawer in the kitchen. Since my wife finds it just a little frustrating, not to mention disgusting, to have to re-clean all the forks, spoons and knives every day before we can use them, it was time to dis-invite our little friend from our house. This I did with a well-baited mousetrap last night. It was successful. As I say, I hated doing it. But for the safety and peace of mind of our family, that mouse had to go.

This is one of the hard things about living out away from town. We've got some lower kitchen cabinets that I need to figure a way to get into cause of what you are talking about here. One of our cats did take care of one varmint. I should some day check to see if she removed it from the driveway.

@sallypup, like you I look at having to deal with mice as coming with the territory of living where we do. No matter what we do, every winter they find their way into the house. I wish we could just put up a hostel or something for them!

@RonElFran Its a year round rodent hotel over here. Probably cause of easy pickings like dog and cat chow and since we make our peanut butter, crumbs from that though I do try to wipe up after myself

I complain a lot about not living in the country any more, but mice are one of the things that I do not miss! Especially in the silverware drawer, but in the pots and pans is bad, too. Better keep that mouse trap handy.

That's a problem I'd never want to have and fortunately not something we have to deal with in this area. You only did what you had to do.

@cahaya1983, we live in a semi-rural area and the mice come with the territory.

Our mice (which we rarely get in the house) seem to be very fussy and it can sometimes take a number of days before I'm able to snare them. I don't like disposing of them either. Luckily I don't have to do it too often.

@RonElFran We must have very fussy mice. They turn their noses and whiskers up at cheese so I tried sultana, dried apricot and finally a tiny piece of bacon. They couldn't resist that!

One thing I'm glad of, @JudyEv, is that once we are aware of a mouse in the house and set out traps, I don't think we've ever failed to catch it.

Oh My, Ronald, Yes! same here. I truly hope it's fairly painless but with winter setting in!! I had to build a breadbox this morning to keep them out of it. I did manage to get one last night before bed and another this morning using peanut butter. Are there any other good sure fire baits?

Peanut butter on a little piece of bread has always worked great for me. When I've used left-over foods from meals, some worked, some didn't.

@jstory07, as I mentioned I like animals, and if mice were clean and tidy creatures I might abide them. But they still wouldn't be welcome in our house. The answer to your question of who wants a mouse in their house is, not my wife!
