Do you go to the theatre? Why? Why not?

FORT LAUDERDALE 2015-2916 THEATRE SEASON

(Sorry it is long but this is a subject I never tire of!) For 70 years I have always dreamed of being a theatre critic and that dream would come true 65 years later! The house lights come down--the tingling in my body starts--the footlights appear and after a few beats the whole house goes dark--I hear the swoosh of the curtain going up and I am tense--the stage is lit and my body relaxes and anticipates--the first actor speaks and I am THERE! The first few strains of the overture start--how can your heart not rush hearing the opening chords of Gypsy, Mame, A Chorus Line, Carousel, South Pacific, Company, West Side Story or any new musical.? (Okay, so I don't like walking into a theatre seeing the curtain up or a musical starting without an overture but the excitement isn't any less.) As much as I love movies live theatre affects me more. I go to the movies to escape--I go to the theatre to be challenged. I have going to the theatre for over 70 years now--I don't remember the first show I saw--and there are moments that have been etched in my mind forever--Brando on stage in Streetcar, Shirley Booth calling for Sheba, Mae West in Diamond 'Lil, the opening number of A Chorus Line, Richard Kiley singing The Impossible Dream as he is dying (and every time I hear it I cry!)--and the list goes on: Julie Harris touching my heart as Frankie in Member of the Wedding and touching my heart in another way in I Am A Camera, Kim Stanly, Geraldine Page, etc. I saw most, if not all of the greats, of the 40s, 50s and 60s, including the awesome second performance of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? Which was a preview. In recent years there was the shock of the final curtain of W;T, the unexpected curtain line of act 1 in Proof, the joy of Hairspray, the music of Steven Sondheim, the writing of Three Women by Albee, the laughter and tears of Angels in America, the politics in Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart--once again a never ending list. The constant cry of theatre groups is "Where are the younger audiences, the future audiences, coming from?" There are so many parents who don't go, have never seen, live theatre--they don't know what they have missed or what their kids are missing. I am glad to say that I saw a lot of kids at Newsies last week! I remember cutting school so that I could be at a matinee when it had an intermission and could walk in with the returning crowd as if I was a member of the audience. (And I've always loved ushers because I knew they knew I hadn't bought a ticket!) I have always been in awe of the actor who has to memorize all those lines and where to be and what to do on stage and exposes him/her self to strangers. It was only later that I became aware of the 'art' of the set, costume and lighting designers, of what makes a production work on all of its aspects. If for no other reason I will stay and applaud all at the bows--they deserve it even when they or the play aren't the best. (Would/could you do what they do?) Children, teens, have to be exposed to theatre, professional theatre hopefully--it is as important an art as any other one. Adults have to support the theatre. The costs might be high but the memories are priceless! I started off talking about being a theatre critic and in 2011, at the age of 75, I was hired at broadwayshowbiz where you can read my reviews and every time I go to see a touring Broadway show I pinch myself ! Have you been to see live theatre? Do you go regularly? If yes what do you think of it and any favorite shows? If no, why not?

I have been to a live theater several times but I don't go often enough to suit me. We don't always have the money to go. I've been to the Orpheum several times and saw plays in New York when we visited there.

They didn't 'restore' the Orpheum until after I left--shows were in the auditorium north of it--forget the name. When I lived in NYC I went to the theatre 3-4 times a week!

@GreatMartin That must have been so nice to be able to go that often while in New York.

Lovely stuff Martin. I do enjoy live theater (or did - it's been years since I last saw a live performance) but it does help to live in a big town or city if you want the latest shows or a decent variety. I suppose I could head to Auckland (an hour away) to catch a show, but all-up costs would top $200. Did you ever think of treading the boards yourself?

@GreatMartin just getting your play on there was an achievement so please don't give up - off-Broadway is a very competitive area to go for - smaller scale fringe or amateur theatre is a better proving and testing ground

No way--I don't have the guts to be an actor (which is why I never walk out before they take their bows!) but I did have a play produced off-broadway--lasted 1 (ONE) performance and then and there I decided my talent was being the best theatre audience!! :O)

@arthurchappell This was 60 years ago and it was a vanity production (that's a long story) but it was bought by the movies and made into a movie with Edward G. Robinson and Ginger Rogers so I made money off it--and because it was a 1 set, 3 actors play a lot of schools put it on BUT I prefer writing books!:O)

I do enjoy live theatre. I used to be in amateur youth theatre groups (now my children do such things and I watch them). Other than seeing my children in their shows, I don't go very often. I think it's been a couple of years. The last live theatre I saw (which my boys weren't in) was an outdoor performance of Dracula. I keep saying I'll take the youngest to see a Shakespeare play but we don't get much chance to do that. There was a theatre company who did a Shakespeare play locally but we couldn't make it. One reason I don't go more often is because it's quite expensive. We have a thriving Civic Hall but it's not as thriving as it used to be since all the groups who use it have to pay extortionate rates so many don't find it worth performing there. I live in Warwickshire which is the county from whence Shakespeare came. We live about an hour or so drive from his home town of Stratford. I've always wanted to take my boys to see a Shakespeare play at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Again, that's very expensive so it's not something we could do more than as a one off occasion. I do, however, go to musical concerts more often than stage plays.

@GreatMartin Unfortunately, it's well out of our budget at the moment. However, as soon as we've moved house, and got my step-daughter's wedding out the way, I might be able to save and take my boys to the RSC!

You have to take the kids to the Royal Shakespeare theatre!! OMG!!! If I lived in Warwickshire and mother didn't take me there she would get my therapist bills!!!

I love theatre, though I don't get to it enough - I saw Amadeus on stage with Frank Finley as Salieri, and Stephen Berkhoff's Hamlet, a few productions of Waiting For Godot and more besides. I have been in a few shows; including a spoof of 2001 A Space Odyssey as the bon throwing ape, and my own play Wendigo Water, actually a radio drama played before a live theatre audience, went out earlier this year.

See my comment above to @troyburns about writing a play! I've had 8 books successfully published but the play got the better of me.

I love the theater! I have also performed on stage, not the big theater, but community theater, and I did a stint in a dinner show for one season in Gypsy. It was a small part, Tessie Tura, she played the trumpet, oh but I will never tire of the theater. Haven't been in a long while, I think the last thing I saw was Cabaret, when it came to Dayton, OH when I lived there. Would have loved to see Cats. And I am hoping I can raise the money to see Wicked in January, in Charlotte NC.

I would have loved to see you 'bump it with a trumpet'!!! As a Internet theatre critic---broadwayshowbiz.com--I have seen (don't hate me!) Wicked 3 times--saw "Newsies" last week--the dancing is unbelievable and will see "Kinky Boots" December 8. If I had to choose between reading or movie going or theatre going the latter would be first on my list!!

I first started going to the theater seventeen years ago, when i married my husband. I love it, and have not been in a long time. The first movie I seen in the Theater was Titanic, and the last movie I seen in theater was 50 Shades of Grey.
