What is Your Favorite Way to Cook a Turkey?

There are many ways to cook a turkey, but without a doubt my all-time favorite is deep-fried turkey! It is so simple to make, and it turns out (at least in my opinion) so much better than an oven-roasted turkey! And much juicier! I have often wondered what makes people slave for hours in a kitchen cooking a turkey in an oven, when in about an hour you can make a deep-fried turkey! Don't get me wrong, I'm not bad-mouthing oven-roasted turkey, as it is delicious in its own way! I guess it boils down to our own individual tastes and preferences, or perhaps it is because of tradition or the way we were taught. There's no right or wrong answer! What's your favorite way to cook a turkey?

@moffittjc if things get better maybe in the future when the price drops we will get one right now with this large move and all the expenses of repairs its not a good idea to do so but I can't wait til we can afford it.

Ooh, now there's a great way to eat a turkey! Although I haven't had smoked turkey in quite a while, I just recently had some smoked ribs, wings and pork tenderloin. A great way to cook meats!

Every year my son in law wants to deep fry the turkey but my daughter over-rules him and it gets cooked in the oven. After hearing how easy it is I might have to take his side next year

It is quick and easy, (cook for three minutes for each pound of turkey), but make sure you follow the directions for using a deep fryer! So many people get injured or ruin their turkey because they don't follow the directions for deep-frying! lol Happy Thanksgiving!

I use the good old fashioned oven but my son is thinking about doing one of his in the smoker, I guess we will see when we arrive at the table.

We do ours in the oven.....stuffed! Then we mix up the stuffing from the turkey, with what we fix in a pan. (the turkey can't hold all the stuffing that we need to fix....lol.)

That's one advantage to cooking a turkey in the oven...being able to stuff it!

The only way I cooked a whole turkey, many years ago, was roasted. Deep fried is surely delicious, but not really healthy.

I was just thinking I wish I could deep fry the turkey instead of roasting it. I am sure it is so much more tasty and juicy as you say. I live in apts though and there is really no place to do this outside.

I live in an apartment too, but that doesn't stop me from deep-frying! The maintenance supervisor in our apartment complex also deep-fries his turkeys (he lives on property), so we often will share each others fryers when cooking turkeys!

@moffittjc do you deep fry outside or inside?

@Marilynda1225 Outside. It's not safe to do it inside! If the oil spilled or happened to catch on fire, it would burn down the house! lol

I liked deep fried as well. At some point I want to buy a 12 pound turkey and cook that in my nuwave cooker though to see how it turns out.

I bought a 20-lb turkey this year, thinking it would be too much, but we already devoured every square inch of it! lol

The old fashioned way - in the oven.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that! (unless you're very hungry and have to wait for hours for it to finish cooking!!!). But still, a good way to cook a turkey!

i want to try a deep fried turkey im sure its as good as eating fried chicken baked is good but mmm fried lol I just don't know if buying the big turkey fryer is worth the money to only use it maybe twice a year thanksgiving and christmas. At least that would be about the only time we would use it. So because we don't have any other way to cook the turkey in the oven it is.

That does make a lot of sense. You can spend anywhere from $50 on up for a fryer, not to mention the cost of the cooking oil and the propane tank to heat the oil. It can get pricey, but if you cook frequently with it, it will pay for itself over time!

I hate to admit I've never cooked a turkey. We used to raise them to sell at Christmas. It was a 'cottage industry' when I was very young. We usually had one for Christmas but Mum cooked it in the wood stove.

@JudyEv I cooked a deep-fried turkey a few days ago, but we couldn't resist and ended up eating the entire thing over the past two days. Now I have no turkey for Thanksgiving, so I just ran out to the Honey Baked Ham Company and picked up a turkey! lol

Up until I learned how to deep-fry a turkey a couple of years ago, I never knew how to cook a turkey. Every year for Thanksgiving I would just buy a big pre-cooked turkey from the Honey Baked Ham Store! lol

@moffittjc It might have been a lot less trouble to buy a turkey but I'm sure you enjoy cooking your own. Deep-fried sounds delicious.

I have heard that the deep-tried turkey is very good, but I've never tried it. I roast mine in the oven and lightly coat it with olive oil. My turkey came out wonderful this year, if I do say so.

I'm a big fan of olive oil, so I can imagine that your turkey was finger-licking good! Hope you enjoyed your holiday!

@Katlynn Lowe's sells the cooking oil for using in deep fryers, so I'm not sure what kind of oil it actually is, but the flavor/juiciness of the turkey turns out perfect each time! Maybe it's vegetable oil, I assume. And thank you...I did enjoy the holiday very much!

@moffittjc Just don't use extra virgin olive oil on turkey. The flavor would be too strong. I did enjoy the holiday and I hope you did, too!

no right or wrong answer huh? my favorite way is watching my mom cook it. haha...no but really i have only ever cooked one turkey I think my whole life. I am still learning how to cook certain things. and I oven roasted it. I don't like I have ever had deep fried turkey nor have i ever had access to be able to cook one. I think thats why my family hasnt' ever done it...because we don't have any way to do it. I don't think that's something my mom will invest in...idk, I have never asked. Maybe some year I will look into it. It does sound like something I would enjoy

I normally put mine in the electric roaster...it comes out real tender! Of course, I like them fried, but do not own a fryer.

I have never ever had it deep fried. We just put ours in the oven and roast it. I wouldn't even have thought that there were other ways !
