A Surprising Envelope !

When I came back to the room after our meeting yesterday , I saw a short brown plastic envelope at the table of my boss .
I read the top letter and it was from the nuns of Daughters of Charity asking if my boss can give what were wished for by the indigent college students who made the wishing cards . It didn’t specifically say to choose one .
So when the boss arrived , read and have seen the inside of the brown envelope he was distraught .
To which I laughingly told him that he can just choose one wishing card, to give what was wished for .
And he asked me to choose for him . So , I chose the one from a girl which asked for a backpack .
We were both laughing because of his first reaction .
I know , if you receive an envelope with many cards of individual wishes , you too would be distraught.

You have a nice boss there and a good relationship. It was thoughtful of him to give the task of choosing to you. Even though he only chose one that means that there is a very thankful girl with a new backpack whereas before she hadn't got one. We can only give within our means.

@arthurchappell It really depend on the giver . If the giver is really rich , then he can get all those wishing cards .

@SIMPLYD sounds a lovely idea - I expect the bigger wishes get claimed first and those of less expensive things get circulated further

Actually, my daughter told me thatlast year they have a Christmas tree in the hospital. She wrote her wishfor a leather folding wallet . she was so happy somebody picked her card and gave her that .
It 's similar to that . So creative way of getting what like not just any gift.

I picked 6 cards off our giving tree at church and went to get the presents last night. It is good the share with others who have less.

That was so kind of you . Yes that is a good way of sharing your blessings indeed .
Though , charity begins at home as a saying goes . We can give first to those at home who also wishes for gifts which they cannot afford , like our helpers .

@SIMPLYD I have no helpers at home, I am the helper!! I give to family and friends but all of them have much, these gifts go to those who have less than we do.

Depends on my cash flow at that time. Some of the kids we work with needed us to pay for their food, buy books and bag or toys.. My husband and I decided we would buy the books.. The food was really expensive, toys we didn't care so much about.. so it was easy to settle for the books and the bag.

I don't know about them having a website , But o think they don't have because they would defat their advocacy of living simply .

Some years we picked names from the angel tree - the kids would write what they want and then people pick the names and buy the gifts. It makes you feel good to do something nice for someone who needs a little help.

@Marilynda1225 I would imagine things like that are done all over. Even our little county takes names and people donate unwrapped toys. Last year we signed up to help and they never called us.

@abbygreemhill out church does a "giving" tree every year and the parishioners pick a gift that a needy child asks for and then brings the gift back to the church. The gifts are then distributed close to Christmas and the pastor makes sure that all children get a gift. Some years he buys gifts himself to make sure no child is left out.

That's a wonderful opportunity for people who are interested to donate to charity. I wonder what brought that reaction from him though - did anyone ask for a paid trip to Disneyland or something?

Of course none . That is so expensive and not realistic . Mostly asked for rubber shoes but those were expensive and doesn't like it because he still have to buy gifts to a lot of grandchildren .
I chose a backpack for a girl college student instead . He let me choose one for him , that' why .

I think your boss was afraid he would have to go do the shopping. It might have been a nice thing if he gave the other cards to the employees there, and suggest that they pass them out to friends or use the cards themselves. I know some employee probably may not be able to afford to do it themselves, but maybe have a friend that could help.

A wish list is the way to determine what to give nowadays.
