~I Wish Doctor's Believed Us Now And Then!~

Sometimes I really wish doctors would listen more to their patients. When we know something is wrong with our own bodies or our children-they should at least pretend to believe us or care what we say. We do know our bodies best and we know our children best-so why not listen a little more? I know many times doctor's think they are much more perfect than we are, they think they know best about everything. Are you lucky with a doctor that actually listens to you? Have you had an experience where the doctor was wrong and you were correct about something?

Doctor's have to go to college for such a long time, when they come out they feel they are entitled to always be right even when they are oh so very wrong. I think it's only the older doctor's who are more apt to listen to the patient's. I also think doctor's were more apt to listen years and years ago when their knowledge was not so advanced as their patient's. I don't like going to the doctor's because nine times out of ten they look to their medical books and studies beofre they look to the individual they are treating.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah, they think they are smarter than everyone else because they have a degree. However, I have found them to be wrong many times!

I gather you have had a bad experience. I've been lucky and have no complaints about medical treatment.

@JaboUK I have had a few of them. One where the doctor told me my daughter had scabies and she did not & I knew she didn't. She actually had hand, foot and mouth virus. Another where a doctor swore I was faking being in labor-my daughter was born 20 minutes later... I'm glad you have not had any bad experiences, I wish I didn't.

@LovingMyBabies It sounds like you have every reason to distrust the medical profession.

I have 3 different doctors due to my health issues and they all work together and our on the same page. They will sit and listen to what i have to say and work with me to help me feel better.

Although my "civilian" doctors are usually very attentive to me, I have that problem with the VA doctors. I've frequently gone to the ER for treatment of my asthma and had them more interested in my blood pressure than the fact that I can't breathe. Thankfully, one day that happened at a clinic just one day after I'd been to my "civilian" doctor, where my BP was perfectly normal. When they started yapping about my 156/120 BP I showed them the reading from the day before of 118/72 and said, "There's nothing wrong with my blood pressure, it's just coming to this place."

@FourWalls I hate things like that. They should pay more attention to the real reason we need them. I have had doctors not listen plenty of times and its frustrating!

Yes there are doctors who does not seem to pay attention when we try to describe our symptoms. Its frustrating when we feel like they are not taking us seriously. Here in Israel , I have to exaggerate the way I describe the symptoms I am feeling so to get immediate attention.

i have always had doctors that listened. I would not continue seeing them if they did not. They have trusted my gut often, about everything from when my kids were going to be born to whether or not I needed medicine.

@GardenGerty Unfortunately I'm unable to change my maternity doctor because I am too far along in my pregnancy. If I could change I would be though because he's not good at listening to me.

I think the doctors want more factual information than to listen to our feelings. I try to be more factual when I go to the doctor. I try to remember the actual day when I get sick, and other symptoms.

After doctors spend 12 years going to college to be a Doctor they think they knew it all. But they should listen to the patients that are paying their bill to see them.

@jstory07 Yes they should most definitely listen more to their patients. Most of the time we know what our own bodies are saying.

Maybe that's because the doctor would attend several, even dozens of patients everyday,if he would treat every patient very carefully and patiently as the patients expected,he might not be able to finish his work and he would be exhausted. Besides, our bad feelings may just be very common in the doctor's view,as he may often see things worse.

@Syllogism They signed up to care for patients so they should have been something else if they didnt want to listen to people. That's part of their job!
