What??

I'm sure most have you have seen it! Over the last few days it seems to have spent a lot of time occupying the top of my screen whenever I've been logged into myLot. At first I thought it was a spoof but a little bit of research has shown it to be genuine. I am, of course, referring to the advert for The Companion Cat. What on earth is that all about? Touted as the ideal gift for elderly relatives it is an artificial cat that supposedly moves and miaows like a real cat. It doesn't! It looks like some rogue taxidermy/robotics enthusiast has had a go at dearly departed Tiddles and produced this ghoulish facsimile in a bid to convince Grandma and Grandad that Tiddles hasn't really shuffled off to the great litter box in the sky. As for it being the perfect gift for elderly relatives, that may well be! Only if you're determined to have them sectioned. "Oh look, Grandad thinks that bag of synthetic fur and cheap electronics is a cat!! Come on Grandad there's a nice man here going to take you for a ride. Just put this nice coat on with the long sleeves!" Maybe we could extend the idea. When Grandad pops his clogs, have him stuffed, rammed full of electronics and sit him in his favourite armchair farting and belching like he's never been gone. "Hey kids, you know we said Grandad had gone away and wouldn't be coming back? Ta da!!!!!!" I may be on to something! Don't go stealing my idea now!!

Clearly MyLot thinks you're are an old duffer in need of mechanical furry company. I've not seen this - perhaps because I'm clearly a cat - and instead I keep being told that only I can stop wild fires.

@WorDazza They must think that I, being a cat, am trying to learn to start wild fires despite having no opposable thumbs.

@boiboing I'm sure that a couple of cats could team up and make up for a lack of opposable thumbs with their cat-like intellect. Or maybe they just couldn't be bothered trying!!

I would be inclined to feel insulted if anyone bought me something like that. It is tantamount to suggesting that they are a child again. I never grew up, but I am not quite that foolish.

@WorDazza Even a toddler would soon get fed up with such a toy.

The advert does portray an elderly couple who do look like they have regressed somewhat. If you gave it as a christmas gift I imagine the thing would have the same limited appeal most novelty items have i.e. discarded before lunch.

@WorDazza My dancing chicken, won at a Christmas party, remained here fore a year before it became possessed by demons and started turning itself on randomly and making horrible apocalyptic noises.

@Bluedoll We could do a Grandma and Grandad pair. Hire them out at Christmas to lend an authentic curmudgeonly air to any family's festive period.
