Do I Own Anybody?

I’m increasingly coming across the slang expression ‘owned’ referring to the idea that if you defeat someone in an argument, debate, sporting contest, etc., or correct some error they made, proving yourself smarter on at least some point, you actually own them. In some card and board games you might get to take control and possession of pieces previously played by an opponent but you don’t own the person or player – you just presented a better case in the discussion. Some rappers seem to think they take ownership by just loudly yelling of ownership to drown out voices of opposition. I don’t own anyone and no one owns me. Arthur Chappell

"I've successfully out-manoeuvred you in a battle of wits" hasn't quite got the same ring to it as "I OWN YOU MAAN!!!"

@Jessicalynnt if you had to sacrifice your independence you would be a treasured possession for sure but stay free

@Jessicalynnt I'd like to be a proper troll, hiding under a bridge and eating passing goats all day

I am in the fortunate position of nobody ever wanting to own me.

I'll avoid that one so I don't have angry wives turning up to have word with me @antonbunot

I've never heard that term used in that manner, and I don't own anyone either.

Not sure if I could own anyone - I don't even own my pet cat - she can do what she wants

I feel the same way you do. Isn't it also used when someone takes responsibility for something? They 'own' it?

I dislike all these expressions that make a mockery of the language. This one seems especially ridiculous.

I noticed that someone wrote owned referring to someone who defeated another and I thought it was a mistake.

@arthurchappell great observation. I find this type of slang a bit offensive. By the way, you left out the word "own" in your last sentence.
