Why do you take photos of your food?

I have a couple friends who send me snap chats of the food they are about to eat. And on Facebook there are lots of people who post photos of their food too. I can understand if you made the food yourself like a beautifully decorated cake or maybe even a huge roast dinner to show off your creation but in general, why do people do it? Like sometimes my friend will send me a photo of a cup of tea and a cookie telling me it's "time to relax." Or a photo of a McDonalds hamburger "time for lunch". Or one time a friend sent me a snap chat of a cut up apple...like ok cool you have fruit. So do I... I don't mind people sharing stuff with me but what benefit do we get from knowing what people are eating? Why is it a thing to share what we are just about to eat? Do we really have to update people on our every move?

Why have you written 'you' in your title? I've never taken a photo of food and sent it anywhere and will never do it.

lol I guess it should be "why do people take photos" but I guess I am trying to actually attract the people who do it.

To me also it doesn't make any sense to post pictures of food and to keep others updated on this account. To take food or breakfast etc. is a personal need and choice of a person and others are not much interested to hear or know. .....what anyone is going to eat. I don't post such updates on any site.

Well, that's the main reason why Social Network Services like facebook are so popular nowadays. Suppose we don't share such mundane activity, what left on facebook?

@VIVALADANI13 I have a perspective that has slight different visions . As an example , lately I paid a visit to nearby eatery and tasted 2 rarest of the South Indian delicacies . Barely people in North India are known to those stuff so I was kind of excited n posted it's picture to my sister . As expected she bombarded lots of questionnaire ......

@parpande I can be more understanding if it was an amazing cooked dinner or whatever but sending me a photo of a cookie? lol my wow radar does not go off from that.

@VivaLaDani13 Well the other vision I have is people might be trying to describe their time as very amazing and they would be the one who broadcasts such 'wow' moment . Certainly this has a valuable objective to make someone envy/jealous ... or they would want some level of attention via comments/likes . Eventually , it depends on an individual but overall it`s obvious to have a thought in mind and that thought is the Discussion posted by you

My colleagues also have such kind of habit. However, I think they want to show off mainly. I don' t often take photos for the food when I am in the restaurant. I remember one day I took such kind of photo with empty dishes, it showed that I finished all of the food with a humor way. I often take photos for the food I cook successfully. As I have an online recipe blog and I want to share it with anyone who is interested in cooking.

@VivaLaDani13 You know something we are free to write abou t what ever we want as long as we obey the rules so if you dislike that type of post just go on by, No need to give the poster troubles. Yes right it is whatever floats your boat and nobody forces you to read anything here at all.

@Hatley Of course everyone is free to write about things. But I do hope you know I am talking about Facebook and Snapchat right? Not here on MyLot. I am certainly not here to attack anyone or cause trouble. I would never do that.

I think some people just like to publicize what their every move is and those kind of people are kind of annoying. I have quite a few friends who do that on Facebook, but there are people who do it, like you said, to share the beauty of a food that may have sentimental value to them or because they want to show off their cooking skills on a certain dish. My mother in law sometimes takes pictures of dinner that she makes to share with her food group on Facebook.

@VivaLaDani13 LOL yeah there are pictures that they put where it isn't great looking and I think maybe sometimes its for the purpose of making others envious but other times it could be like they want to share what they think is yummy.

Well yeah I do agree if they are showing off their cooking skills then that's fine but otherwise, just like you said, it is annoying and I'm really not understanding why it is so important for them to share those photos. Like I get what you mean. But what exactly are they thinking when they upload it? Are they thinking the food will make us jealous and that we will envy them for it? I personally don't care. Half the food they post looks like cat vomit anyways so I never care about it.

That's why I'm not on Facebook. I can't stand all this kind of stuff - well, I can and I wouldn't say anything to anyone but I'm just not that interested in knowing what a person is eating. We have a friend who is always posting these wonderful dishes that he is trying at some restaurant or other. That's a bit interesting I suppose. I'm becoming a grumpy old woman!

lol I am 24 and I am already grumpy! I have already started using the phrase "back in my day." lol Comparing people from my time to the people now. Oh man don't even get me started on the teenagers from today! Oh my god! THEY ANNOY ME! Majority of them are so ungrateful and disrespectful....ok so I started ranting about them lol I will stop. I think it is cool if someone is a cook and wanting people to check out their new creations or even if it is someone wanting to learn how to cook and wanting advice. But for the people who constantly update us on things we don't give a crap about....no...that is annoying!

Only photos of food I take are when I am about to partake of something exotic or of a dish I have prepared myself and am about to write the recipe, but, as you mentioned, I do have friends who post their daily meal on FB, Kinda weird, but I guess it is just their way of keeping in touch, a little like inviting a person out for a digital lunch :)

Well I think what you do is fine. Because you are making and creating unusual or beautiful dishes. That would actually be interesting. HAHAHA Digital lunch. That's funny.

We don't know their motives for doing so. Yes, it is alright if they cooked that food to show off their achievement, but for some other reasons? I guess it is not well-appreciated.

Most of the time I feel like they think we actually care. If it is some spectacular looking meal then awesome but if it is a sandwich then.....just a waste of time. I don't see the point in people who update everyone with every little thing they do.
