I did a bad bad thing....

.....something I should not have done, ever. I lived many years without doing it and I should not have done it....seriously! I made a red velvet cake and for the first time in my life I made buttercream frosting...OMG...I am in heaven! I am sure I'll pay for it in the long run - all that butter...all that sugar....all that goodness - it will be worth it! Needless to say I had powdered sugar all over the kitchen. What amazed me was putting 3 cups of it in a sifter and getting double that out of it! It's the little things that give me joy. I think we will start off the festivities this evening with that cake, I can't wait. I would have taken a photo of it, but I am not the best person for the job of frosting a layer cake....it looks like a two-year old did that part!

@AbbyGreenhill When I started reading I thought the cake did not turn out well. The powdered sugar all over the kitchen and other mess are nothing when the cake tastes good.Wish you, your husband and Ruby a Merry Christmas.

Wow, you really make my saliva drips. I have never baked a cake in my life, and never will try to make it as you did. However, I have a fancy for cakes. It sure tastes nice with a cup of tea.

I absolutely LOVE buttercream but have never attempted to make it myself. I would probably just eat that and forget the cake

There is taro, banana, papaya, mango, and bread fruit poe too. So I guess you win on this one with your wonderful cake. Have fun eating this one and Merry Christmas.

Surely you do not expect us to believe this nonsense about the frosting? The reason that you cannot take a photograph is that you have probably already eaten it all.

Not so...I do not lie - it won't get cut until later this evening. I'll take one when I cut it

Tell people you did the frosting that way on purpose. Then next we set up a buffet of desserts. I have a chocolate mocha poke cake to cut tomorrow. I bet someone will provide a carrot cake as well.

Don't worry about the frosting. When something tastes good, no one seems to remember how it looked!

I have no idea what a red velvet cake is. Is it really red?
• United States
24 Dec 15
Yes, it is red....and they say it has a chocolate flavor but I don't taste chocolate. It's food dye that makes it red and it stains things! It's a southern cake - did you see Steel Magnolias? The grooms cake at the wedding was a red velvet cake in the shape of an armadillo.
