Manchester is far too busy today

Animated Boxing Day

I took a quick trip into Manchester city centre as usual today, but could not believe how busy it was. Today is definitely far busier than any of the shopping days running up towards Christmas were. I knew that Boxing Day was traditionally the start of the sales, but certainly did not expect so many people to venture out today. After alighting the Metrolink tram at Exchange Square I cro9ssed the road and entered the Arndale centre. The street outside was busy enough, but inside it was difficult to even walk due to the vast hoards of people wandering aimlessly around. Surprisingly Greggs bakery was not too busy, so I simply bought a coffee and headed back to the Metrolink station and returned home. No doubt I will be stupid enough to make the same mistake again next year.

Whatever you do, do not come to Manchester for it. Getting through the crowds would take longer than the flight.

@Asylum Thanks for the heads up. I like flying, but crowds are not my thing.

There is nothing like a sale or a return to get people out into the stores today. Not me however.

That is the next day after Christmas. They must be collecting items for the next year as they say after the event things go cheap.

I do know several people who buy Christmas items such as decorations and cards in January for the following Christmas because they are vastly cheaper at that time.

@allknowing Only a small percentage of people bother to do that, so it is not likely to change.

I would not expect Boxing Day to be known in China, it is an old British tradition that is still celebrated as a holiday.

It does seem an unnecessary day to begin the annual sales.

I didn't venture out yesterday but I'm sure there were tons of people out as there were a lot of after Christmas sales.

@simone10 No, it was just seriously busy and crowded. If it had been a madhouse then I would have felt perfectly at home.

@Inlemay Christmas has now passed and I have one for New Year, so I decided to use a temporary one. I was uncertain whether to use the Dickensian character, a Genie or my old Caveman.

If you don't have to shop on the day after Christmas it is better to stay home and enjoy the peace and quiet. I had to go return something today but other than this I would never of gone shopping. There is a small market by the house and no need to go to the big super store here.

I would have to be in desperate need for something before I would consider doing that.
