Got Milk? Yes, But At What Cost?

United States
January 5, 2016 6:57am CST
It seems that due to the snow and freezing weather in some of our mid-western states that over 30,000 cows died. People in other areas thinned their herds for various reasons. Add those two items together and it means fewer cows supplying milk for consumers. Fewer cows, less milk equals higher prices. Yes, the cost of milk is going to rise. It's funny that Social Security recipients didn't get a cost of living raise for 2016 but the cost of everything we buy (except gas) is going up up and away. Maybe they figured if they gave us cheap gas we wouldn't notice other prices on the rise. Photo: pixabay.com/en/milk-cow-drink-calcium-642734/

@fishtiger58 When I was a kid we lived near Rutgers/Douglass College - Rutgers had a farm not far and they had the sheep, chicken, cows, etc. and you could walk thru the stinky barns and pet the animals. I think I remember the stink more than anything else.

With the kind of national debt that US is facing, it is a wonder that they have not cut the social security payout. I do not see a way for US to pay down the national debt.

Yes, I think there is a bit of a raise in the cost of living nearly every year. Who gets to choose anyway? Poor cows. I always find it sad when animal die.

I did not know that! I love milk and I buy organic milk (which will be even more expensive)

@AbbyGreenhill Yes, I know ! But instead of buying one regular gallon of milk, I would buy half a gallon organic to save costs.

Anything organic costs two arms and three legs.

I agree they sent me a letter saying since the cost of living didn't increase in 2015 there won't be a raise. Bet it is going up now.

Oh my, that sounds like a catastrophe! Dwindling supply would definitely make prices skyrocket like crazy. I guess you could try to look for other solutions like importation of milk (although pricey), or trying other sources like goat's milk. I heard goat's milk is creamier and healthier than cow's milk, although I haven't verified that info yet.

I don't use much milk so it doesn't really hurt me at all. Just the thought of drinking a glass of milk turns my stomach.

You are right, we did not get a Social Pension raise, but most of the food prices are going up.

@AbbyGreenhill I would also like to know the names who decided the same here in Switzerland. It seems there is a lobby to prevent governments to raise the Social Pensions.

@LadyDuck My deeper concern is someone deciding it's time to end Social Security...that would be a disaster.

I still like to know who actually decided we didn't need a raise...I want their name!

You are so right about everything going up except Social Security. Gas prices are down but we can't afford to go anywhere or buy anything once we get in the car LOL

What about the sensors who don't drive, then they really get no benefit at all.

In Australia, the big monopolies squeeze the farmers until many throw in the towel and go out of business. Then we have shortages.
