School Closing, Thanks to the Weather.

It's only 11.30am and I've just been to collect my daughter from school. We got a text informing us that the school was being closed and to collect children. I can't honestly remember the school ever closing during the day before, but obviously I knew it could. Sure, in previous winters (the ones when we got snow) the school has never opened some days, but don't think they've ever actually sent children home early before. Today, the school has been closed because of deteriorating road conditions as a result of the continuous, heavy rain. We've had a lot of that lately. More than I care to remember. Just pray that this doesn't result in more flooding of the village.

Oh no. More flooding? I had never known the schools to close either in England when I was there.

@Darroch Dozing by the fire sounds cozy. I hope you and your family stay safe.

@sallypup Yes, thanks - Was so glad that he got home safe. It can be really quite worrying with all the flooding we've been having recently.

Roads are terrible. tbh though I was more worried about my husband getting home safely as he'd to go quite a distance today for work. At least the school closing, it was just a case of going to collect our daughter. Knowing someone has to travel on the flooded roads is a worry. Thankfully he managed home safely, but he's totally done in and is now dozing by the fire.

When I worked in the school system every time we would have a little snow flurry the phones would ring off the hook. Parents would panic and wonder if the schools would be letting out early. Often times when we get heavy snow the roads get horrendous. They have been closed for a few days in the past due to flooding.

I've never seen rain like we've been having recently here. The snow is much more normal, but even then it's been a few years since there's been a bad winter. I do though remember one year that the school was closed for over a week because of snow, but never has it closed because of rain before.

@Darroch it must be coming down quite heavily for them to be concerned with the safety of the children. Hopefully the rain will stop and if not, lessen at the least.

@ElusiveButterfly It is and not forecast to stop today. Had more than enough of this rain. Oh, and my husband is out with his work today and I've just heard that there's a stretch of road to get back to where we live that is only passable just now in 4x4 vehicles (which his work's van isn't).

Having a day off from school is a good news for children. I am not quite sure whether it is a good news for parents, especially for those who have to work fulltime. Nobody can take care of their children and they are forced to take a day off from work.

Well, the school has since posted on the website saying they will remain closed tomorrow as well. Think my daughter is quite happy about that. At least though this time we have warning about tomorrow. Today, we got a text to go and collect child(ren) straight away.

I hope it doesn't flood anymore. Some areas here is flooded also. I read on the local news, an elementary school is closed due to flooding and mud all over the school.

Good step taken by school administrators. It's better to be safe.

Yeah, definitely. No point in getting into the situation when they need to use the emergency contacts for the out of village children if they can avoid it. And then of course there's also the safety of the staff to take into account too.

Is it that bad up there? Gosh. We have had the heavy rain, but the only flooding has been in the areas designed to flood, thankfully. I imagine that the children will be happy though!

I've never known to be like it's been the past couple of weeks. It's really awful. Someone did tell me the last time the weather was like this was 160 years ago. Think there will need to be something serious done with the river here, especially with the way the weather looks to be going. Yes - my daughter was very happy to get home, as I imagine others would have been. Not that my daughter doesn't enjoy school, but guess it's the excitement of it all.
