Random Word Post – uppish

I find a random word by flipping through my 2003 The New Webster’s Concise Dictionary and write a quick – often silly – little post about it. # “Informal UPPITY.” I don’t normally do this, but the definition for uppity is: “Informal Arrogant; snobbish; haughty.” So, if you don’t want to use uppity because it’s too hoity-toity, you can use the doubly informal uppish. I admit, I’d never heard of uppish before. I guess I run in higher circles than that.

Perhaps it's more common in British usage. We use it sometimes to describe teenagers, tin-pot do-gooders and any small person who appears to be getting above their station. I'm not sure that 'snobbish' or 'haughty' quite hit the mark, though. "Don't get uppity!" is used mostly when someone is getting their knickers in a twist about something and "uppish" is used to describe someone who is likely to become defensive or slightly belligerent or is tending to assume an authority which they don't possess.

Interesting. I guess I just need to hang out with more Brits.
