The Kings New Clothes or is it me??

There is a fairy story about about two weavers who make the king a new suit of clothes. These two weavers are incompetent and so they instead weave a tale. They tell the king that only certain people can see suit. Anyone who is stupid or not fit for the position that they hold will not be able to see it. Only the wise and those fit for their positions in society will be able to see this special suit of clothing. Of course those not wishing to look stupid or incompetent does not like to say that he cannot see the clothes. So he says instead how wonderful the clothes are. All his servants not wishing to look foolish agree with their king. Of course we know how this story ends. When the king is out in a parade a little boy in the crowd shouts look at the king he has no clothes on. Well I have said all this to set the scene this is a bit how I feel about nouvelle cuisine. I hope I have got the spelling right on that, if not I am sure someone will help me out on this. Have you seen what passes sometimes for a main course in some of the fancy restaurants. A smear on a plate is the sauce less than a handful of miniature veggies with the tiniest piece of meat or fish. This is a main course? There is hardly enough real food on the plate to keep a three year old fed. Now they are doing a little bit of foam as part of the meal, what is going on here? Is it just me? Am I the only one who think they are having a laugh at our expense? When I say at our expense, I can't afford to eat this kind of rubbish. The price of a meal would probably wipe out my food budget for a week or even a fortnight lol... Well am I the only one or do some of you think that there is a bit of a case of the King's New Clothes going on here? You know only those with a discerning palate will appreciate this meal. Only those who know their food will appreciate this. Is it just me? No photo of this kind of meal as I haven't been in a place that serves this kind. I am more of a greasy spoon kind of girl lol...

I am with you, this is what French call "nouvelle cuisine", they pretend to offer a modern style of cooking without rich foods, but with fresh ingredients and a nice presentation of the dishes. In reality you are still hungry when you have finished your meal.

@maggs224 I agree and the less you have in your dish, the more you pay. This is ridiculous.

@LadyDuck I am all for value for money, and the scrappy little bits that they pass off as a meal Anna is not value for money :D

You're certainly not the only one. The other thing that gets me is the pseudo-fancy names they give dishes which aren't all that fancy.

We have a restaurant not far from us which occasionally offers 'taster meals' - six or seven courses of small portions of beautifully cooked and presented food - for about £40 per person (and THAT is a half-price offer!!!). That is WAY beyond my normal budget for eating out, of course, but if one is celebrating a special occasion and it's only once a year, it is an experience not to be missed. I think that the way to treat this 'nouvelle cuisine' (or maybe 'nueva cocina', if you are Spanish) is to eat slowly, with small mouthfuls and much good conversation. Apparently, the stomach thinks it is full after about 20 minutes of eating, so the slower you eat, the less you need to eat. This is a photo of just ONE of the courses!

@owlwings We call your 'nouvelle cuisine' Tapas and at the places we frequent the tapas is free with our drinks lol... Tapas is eaten slowly with much good conversation and enjoyment and we don't need to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. Though the tapas does not come on a big plate like yours did :D

I can't afford to even look at those kinds of food places, so I can't really comment on the amount of food they give. If I'm going to go to a restaurant, I want to be full when I leave, not just able to say I had a "pretty" meal.

@fawkes62 If you order a meal you want a meal as one on-line definition puts it A meal = any of the regular occasions in a day when a reasonably large amount of food is eaten. reasonably large being the point in my view lol...

@EugenesDDen I have found that even the senior's portions in the USA are too big for me. Like you I don't like getting too much on a plate but the size of some of those portions are ridiculous :D

I don't like getting too much on a plate at a restaurant. I have a small appetite so I hate being full and having to leave food on a plate.

It reminds me of the commercial that has just a tiny piece of something on a plate. I forget what the commercial is for but it's about getting something for your money, not just a tiny piece of the whatever you want to call it meal. It's not just you. I can't afford that kind of meal either, and neither can my appetite, which needs a full blown course.

@just4him I think certain types of food satisfy us, especially the kind of foods we ate growing up. I think that certain foods are so much more than just the enjoyable taste, they also are connected to memories and eating these things bring a lot of comfort with them.

We had this type of meal at my husbands New Year Kick Off party for work. I took snacks to the hotel for the night because we always get this type of meal. We had breakfast in that hotel that next morning, $42 for some oatmeal, fruit and eggs Benedict. thank goodness we weren't paying for it.

I don't want to pay a hefty price for a pretty plate. I know exactly what you are talking about and maybe the Hollywood celebrities who wear size "less than zero" eat this way. Not for me...I want to enjoy a whole plate of food

@Marilynda1225 Taste is important to me I would rather have a smaller amount of something I love than a large amount of something that is kind of blah tasting. Even so like you Marilyn I want enough of it to constitute a meal lol..
