Morley's Seven Childhood Memories

After reading the discussion by @Auntylou I was inspired to write about seven childhood memories. My first clear memory was when I was just between eighteen and twenty two months. Most people will tell me it is a plants memory, but the picture in my mind precedes the photograph taken at twenty two months. My father was building a rocking horse. I had been ill for several days and came downstairs early one evening. I was told the (unpainted that day) rocking horse was to b mine. The picture attached to this discussion is the first photo showing the rocking horse. Another memory took place when I was five. We went to Holland in an airplane. I was so afraid you could open the windows and fall out, until I was on the plane and saw that we could not open the windows. The third memory would have been she I was about seven. Our house had a very steep staircase. My older brother threatened to push me, so I jumped all the way from the top. My legs were a little sore that day. The carefree days when I was eight or nine, we'll make this a double memory. We lived beside a small river or creek. In the summer my older sister and brother would join me in walking for miles along its winding banks. We also tried many times to dam the river with rocks. Each time we would have it almost half way the current would move any new rocks we threw in, aside. Memory six. My mother was expecting a baby. We knew it was going to be born soon. My father asked us in the morning, what we wanted....my sister and I said, a sister, nope, my three brothers wanted another brother, nope. We were the proud siblings of twin brothers. The final memory included in this list will mention one of the twins. Mom had back problems, so my older sister and I were expected to help out. Often in the morning my sister would bathe the larger of the twins, while the smaller one was my baby. Hopefully this list inspires you to write a post about your childhood memories. @Platespinner I decided to not include my memories of your childhood. I'll save them for another day.

I already did my list a while ago. Isn't it great reading about childhood memories? You were lucky to have such a beautiful rocking horse.

My daughter told me yesterday, it is still in her basement storage room. It has been used by many children over the last 50+ years

I love wooden rocking horses. I never had one as a child but there was one at my Nan's home.

I love that my daughter still has it. She has sent so many toys to Goodwill, but this is still in her basement.

@Morleyhunt Yes this one can happen. I loved the game we played on the street in the summer called pull the rope. We would get a group of kids on each side of the road. Act like we were lined up behind each other. When a car came down the road and just before it reached us one of us would yell pull the rope. We would act like we were pulling a rope and the cars would slam on their breaks. After we all scattered. Just to go back and do it again.

I'm looking forward to reading more. I think I've come up with enough memories that I could write about one every day for a month.

What a huge jump for a little girl! You are lucky to have escaped almost unscathed!

I'm lucky I didn't do serious damage.. I still think it would have been more painful if he had pushed me.

There are many good memories, there are also a lot of not so good memories that I try not to dwell on.

I picked seven...the first ones that came to mind. It has given me many more ideas to write about in the coming weeks. Those will be spun into a full post per idea.

Do you know if your parents knew your mother was having twins? My mother had twins in 1938 but didn't know. One baby was born, the doctor said 'Hang on. I think there's another one' and sure enough, a second baby made its appearance. A bit different to nowadays.

My parents had a few hours notice. Mom had been admitted to hospital as her water had broken. The doctor initiated she was having a large baby (10 lbs) a month early. My mother asked, could there be two? The nurse, I insisted that there were two. At 7:30 PM, the doctor order an X-ray. Two hours later twin boys were born, 20 minutes apart. I guess mom and the nurse were right.

I love reading your memories. I had to help out with the babies a lot too. They weren't twins though. I loved doing it.
