What If You Found A Wallet Full of Money on the Road

My son, on his way home found a wallet with $200 cash, some hundred peso bills and checks of various amounts. The wallet has an Identification Card but unfortunately there were no contact numbers or complete address written on it. But there were calling cards of various persons in the wallet so my son took time to call the numbers until he was able to contact one that gave him the landline of the owner of the wallet. So to cut the long story short, the wallet was returned to the owner who was very thankful to my son. I asked my son if he would do the same thing if he found thousands of dollars or even more. He said: "Mom, for as long as there is an ID or any way to trace the owner, I will return even a million dollar or more. If I keep that money that would be like stealing". I was so glad to hear that. Would you do the same?

Here in China I wouldn't even touch the big amount of cash laying on floor just in case it's a trap. Honesty is good no matter where you are.

You have obviously brought your son up well. I would probably just have taken it to the police station, but I certainly wouldn't have kept it.

I would not feel right spending it, so I would either give it charity or give it to the lost and found in the police station.

I think I'm in love, your son is smarter than a lot of people. Yes I would have tried to find the owner and if I couldn't I would give it to the police. I am a true believer of karma.

To keep for ourselves what obviously does not belong to us is not on. I would rather hand over to the police asap. I remember when the mobile phone was at its infancy I was walking with my son who was just few years old. He chanced upon the mobile phone and in a while there was an incoming call. Then we handed it over to the owner who was a teenager and his eyes teared up to get back his precious gadget - siva

Yes keeping what does not belong to you is not right. It is the same as stealing. Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you. If I lost something I would appreciate whoever found it to return it back if possible. And its so stressful loosing a phone, you and your son did great. @Shiva49

I would do evertying I could to find the owner, as like your son said, it would be stealing to keep the money that wouldn't belong to me. If I couldn't get informaation as to who it is, I would turn it over to the police and let them take care of it, and hopefully, they would find the owner.

@salonga I know that God wouldn't be pleased with me, if I took something that didn't belong to me. I would certainly have a guilty conscience as well.

You raised your son well . And he just did the right thing . Reporting it to the police would somehow be not an assurance that it will be turned over to the rightful owner .

I found several before, I found the owners on fb, they identified a few things in the wallet. One of the wallets I found in the grocery store, one i found in a parking lot, both wallets had money , found them years apart. People were happy to get the wallets back, most of the time, they simply do not get returned.

Yes and I have done the same here in Tahiti. One time I found a check on the road that could of easily of been cashed fro over 10K. I knew who it belonged to and took it back to them. They were so worried about it. I have found wallets and given them back. I have even found car keys and put up notices to find the owners. I am like your son I don't believe in keeping anything that isn't mine. Now if I found a paper bag full of money and there was no way to prove that it belonged to a person then I might consider keeping it. But before I did this one I would check the papers, stores, and online to see if anyone lost such an item and could tell me how much was in there.

@salonga I don't believe in taking anything I haven't earned or isn't mine. I know my nephew found a very expensive cell phone on the beach the other day. He wanted to keep it. But his mom charged the phone and found a lot of phone numbers in this. She found who the person was and had a message delivered to them. They were so happy to get back their phone and gave him $5 for not keeping it. So I feel that honesty does pay in the end and you're rewarded for your efforts.

I would certainly do the same and, if there were no way of identifying the owner, I would put notices up in the local shops saying "Wallet with money found. Please contact ...". If someone called, they would have to describe the wallet and what it contained before they could claim it, of course. If nobody claimed it in a reasonable time, I would then consider how best to deal with it (depending on the amount).

I think that the wisest thing to do to find the real owner now if nobody claims it is up to you to do what you want with the money.

Once, I was walking along a country road with some of my kids and dogs. We found a wallet on the side of the road. It belonged to a school boy. It only had a few dollars but we spent a lot of time tracking him down and taking it to his parents miles away.

Your son did the right thing @salonga . I would have done exactly the same thing. Even if it was just a 'bag' of money, I would take it to the police and have them trace the numbers. Then if they couldn't find who it belonged to, I would expect to get it back. Finders-keepers in that case.

Finders keepers can truly apply when no one claims despite the effort or if there is really no way to trace the owner.
