Coffee and Cake Cancelled

After a couple of hours looking at cars, we headed home and along the way stopped off at one of the big garden centres to have a look at what post-Christmas bargains they might have. My husband had something else on his mind - coffee and cake in the garden centre's in-house cafe. We had a good scout around first to look for good buys, bought a new collar for Baloo (the cat) in the pet store and then headed into the cafe. After about 5 minutes standing in a line that was going nowhere, my husband suggested we give up, go home and make our own coffee and pick up a cake from the village shop. He just HATES queueing and so do I. We grabbed a couple of discounted orchids (great prices), a calendar (because nobody bought us one this year) and headed home. Luckily we were back early enough to get in a walk before it got dark, to pick up a cake, and to do coffee and cake at home.

There are free calendars in my country every New Year from the stores and supermarkets. We don't need to spend more.

Ah but a calendar is more than just a list of dates. You have to find one you're happy to look at for 365 days.

I wonder if anybody does? Though I must admit on the rare occasions I get a short or non existent line in airport security, it then throws me into a tizzy because I'm not ready for them.

Coffee probably was better at home then at the cafe, lol. Glad you had a great day and got your walk in.

Our village has a coffee shop in the library but sadly it's not open on Saturday afternoons.

I hate queuing too. You were probably far more comfortable having it at home!

If we had sacrificed the cake completely, I might have cried too.

I don't like waiting in line long either and I would have done the same thing gone home and home my cake and coffee there.

I should have gone to my mum's - she always has home-made cake.

@boiboing That would have been an idea to go to your mum's and have your home made cake there.

@Marcyaz shame that it's a 250 miles round trip but maybe that's a good thing as her cakes are TOO good.

@boiboing Queuing is such a boring activity and I'm baffled as to why people ever queue for restaurants. I find it quite demeaning and refuse. Hope you enjoyed your coffee and cake at home. I also refuse to queue for toilets, but then men rarely need to. Lucky us.

In particularly long ones, I can usually get out my kindle and find something to read

@DianneN These two are gorgeous. Just the one phaelenopsis (because I always lose them to scale bugs) and one whose name I don't recall but it should survive better as the leaves are less fleshy.

We always choose the wrong queue. Always. Today we got stuck in a slow-moving queue of cars! Glad you got cake!

How is that possible that we ALWAYS get the wrong line every time?

@Poppylicious Statistically of course we can't always get it wrong - so why does it feel like we do?
16 Jan 16
@boiboing It's truly ridiculous. I wonder if there are some people who always choose the right queue, the one which continues to move swiftly. Maybe it's an ancient sub-conscious instinct.

Yes indeed. We're on a 'dry' January so a bit of cake now and then is good compensation.

I hate staying in line too. The solution to pick up a cake and have coffee and cake at home was surely the best.

I think the cake would have been better (and a lot more expensive) in the garden centre but sometimes the sacrifice of having more control is worth it.

Probably a much better idea to have the coffee and cake at home where you can relax and enjoy it. What kind of cake??

Carrot cake. It's a small round cake - about 5-6 inch diameter- from the local Coop supermarket. It was on special for £2 and we ate half of it.

I'll be honest that it wasn't great quality cake but it was nice to not have to wait for a painfully slow barista to make a mess of our drinks.
