A Huge Increase in Coffee Consumption...Thanks Winter!

I admit I am addicted to my morning coffee. Well, more specifically, my morning Starbucks coffee! Up until about a week ago, I was able to keep my addiction under control, limiting myself to only one cup of Starbucks per week (I make up for it by drinking several cups of coffee at home each morning, followed by several more when I get to work)! But, due to this cold weather, my Starbucks consumption has increased threefold, from my usual one a week, to two or three a week! And let's face it...Starbucks isn't cheap! I made an agreement with myself early on when I finally caved in and started drinking Starbucks (yes, I resisted the temptation for years). My deal was that I would only buy Starbucks from my online earnings. And up until this point, I was able to earn more online than I was spending at Starbucks. But now, however, my consumption has increased faster than my ability to rake in the online revenue! Oh no! So, you would think I would need to decrease my Starbucks consumption to match the online revenue coming in! But no! Being the good American I am, and taking notes from our federal government, I will just go into deficit spending instead of cutting down on my consumption! I'm sure I'll figure out a way to pay for it all at some future date! But seriously, I really need to cut back on my coffee consumption, because I really do refuse to dip into my regular work earnings to pay for it. If my online earnings can't keep up with the consumption, then I need to go cold-turkey on the Starbucks for a while! Easier said than done, right my friends?!?!

@moffittjc ok I just have to ask but what is so special about Starbucks? Isn't coffee all the same gross tasting drink?

@VivaLaDani13 Do you really not have a Starbucks in Perth? Interestingly, my barista that made my latte yesterday was from Australia; she said she was from a small town outside of Melbourne. I didn't think to ask her if there were Starbucks in Melbourne.

I love coffee and I need to have my morning coffees. I always prepare my coffee at home, using a drip machine for breakfast and an espresso machine for the rest of the day.

@moffittjc We have no Starbucks, but delicious espresso coffee in almost every bar. I make it at home, it's far less expensive.

Yes! i'm right there with you on that! I have to have coffee every morning to help wake me up and get my day started! The worst part for me is that Starbucks is right around the corner from my home, so it is very hard to resist stopping there for their delicious coffee, even when I have a cup of coffee in my hand already! haha

@LadyDuck Someday I hope to purchase my own espresso machine for my home! Not only would it be nice to have, but it would save me lots of money from having to go to coffee shops!

I prefer our own home brewed coffee to anything in any coffee shop, so I am safe. Good luck with your deficit and your addiction.

Maybe a way to "cure" you from spending money at Starbucks would be to think like this "Do I really want to make Starbucks richer and me POORER"! Does the trick for me.

That's the ONLY reason I don't go there every day! So, that rational works for me 6 days out of every week! I look at it like this: I reward myself once a week with a Starbucks for going the whole week without drinking Starbucks! hahaha

You'd better not move to Europe where Starbucks is MUCH more expensive. I bought three hot drinks in Atlanta airport for less than it would have cost for one in a British airport last year.

Doesn't that pretty much apply to anything you buy in England? I think I remember a friend of mine who lives in England telling me that it costs more for one Krispy Kreme donut in England than it does for an entire dozen here in the US!

@moffittjc Your friend was exaggerating. I just looked up the US prices and they are about a third cheaper than the UK, that's all. In effect the same numbers but yours are dollars and ours are in pound. And the difference is that we have only a small number of KK production sites so they don't have the critical mass you have over there. Equally less competition (we don't have many donut shops to drive prices down) and staff get proper wages. If you want supermarket donuts you can still get those at four for a pound.

@moffittjc Krispy Kremes are around £1.20 each ($1.71 each) in the UK and $15.62 for a dozen.

I am always having problems between my needs and my budget, specially in what I call luxury or addictions. I don´t buy chocolate (one of my addictions) as I like the very best and more expensive one. But I thank VERY MUCH when a friend brings me some. With coffee it is the same. I drink a good homemade coffee at home but only once in a while I give in to an awesome cappuchino with lot of cream.

@Marilynda1225 That's my biggest fear...that I will get hopelessly addicted to Starbucks and end up in the poorhouse. I'm pretty sure heroin is less addictive than Starbucks! lol

Well, since I can generally limit myself to only one visit per week, I'm probably not as hopelessly addicted as I think I am! I can still resist the urge (barely) to avoid Starbucks on a daily basis. However, I am addicted to coffee in general, which is why I am always making coffee at home and at work! lol

I've never had a cup from Star Bucks or any other kind of place like that @moffittjc . I know, don't faint. I wonder if they are putting something 'addictive' in the coffee.

If you've never been to Starbucks, then stay away and don't ever go! You will get addicted! I used to laugh at all the people who drank Starbucks, but then I made the mistake of trying a latte from there, and it was heavenly! They must put something in them to make them so addictive! lol

Here is a shocker..... I have never had Starbucks coffee :) but I do love Duncan donuts house coffee and I only get that when I am down by the interstate :) I make all my coffee at home. Now here is a thought, make your own version if the coffee you buy.

I actually have a Dunkin Donuts across the street from me, and I would be more than happy to drink their coffee if they had soy milk or almond milk. I'm lactose intolerant, so I can't drink their lattes until such time as they start offering non-dairy options to mix in. I have been experimenting at home trying to recreate the same latte I get at Starbucks, and so far I just haven't been able to get the taste just right. But I'm working on it!

I am making and drinking more coffee at home due to the cold weather. And it is very annoying to have my cup of coffee go cold so fast, even after I knitted a cozy for my mug. But I keep wanting something warm to drink, and coffee is so comforting.

I have been having the same problem! I have been making a lot more coffee at home (I'm drinking some now as I type this), but the coffee keeps getting cold before I can finish it! Apparently, I need to start drinking it faster! lol But in the meantime, I just stick the mug in the microwave and heat it back up!

I had a starbucks in New York with an extra shot of course! I will not buy it here in the UK A) because Starbucks are tax dodgers and do not pay their taxes here and B) It is quite expensive in the UK around $5 a cup.

I generally do the same thing. I'll make enough coffee so that I can have a cup at home, and then the rest I take with me to work. I don't know why I do that, because we have a Keurig at work and I end up making even more coffee at work! I think it's because I like having coffee in my truck to drink on my way in to the office!

This question might seem a little childish. But starbucks isn't exactly available everywhere in India and so I have limited experience with the brand. So here it is : By the look of the cup, it looks like a lot of coffee for a single sitting. (I'm only referring to the starbucks cup shown in Hollywood movies.) South Indians are famous for filter coffees and our cups are one fourth of a starbucks cup. How do you manage to drink so much coffee?
@moffittjc (118449)

You bring up a very good point! Yes, their coffee cups are huge! They do offer several different size options, and their small cup is more in line with the standard size most people would drink at home, but what you usually see in the movies is the large or "grande" size they sell, which is their most popular. Usually, when you see those cups, the people aren't drinking just regular coffee. Those larger cups usually contain lattes or cappuccinos, which are coffee drinks that have frothed milk and whipped cream added. So, to make room for the frothed milk and whipped cream, they put them in larger cups so they can fit all that in there and still get the lid on top! Hope this answer helps!
