On this day, January 26th, 1788, the first European settlers landed in present-day Sydney, Australia.
Also, on this day in 1837, Michigan became the 26th state in the USA.
Another thing that happened on this day was that Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1861, and in 1870, Virginia rejoined the Union.
And for those of you who live in India, this was the day in 1950, that India officially proclaimed itself a republic when Rajendra Prasad took the oath of office as president.
Actor Paul Newman was born on this date, along with Eddie Van Halen and Wayne Gretzky as well as many others.
