Breaking Down a Successful Mylot Post, the Preview Sentence (part 1)

Does your Mylot post stand out? Does it draw in followers and encourage participation? Fear not, if it doesn’t, it certainly could. I realized as I wrote the piece yesterday (see link at the end of this piece for the original piece), in regards to the various important parts of a successful mylot post (aside from solid writing, few errors, spacing, and an interesting topic), I completely left off the preview sentence. I have since edited that back in, but decided to focus on it more specifically. What do I mean by preview sentence? Click on, for example, the Explore Tab, then on the left click on the “Interesting” tab. Once that page loads you will see discussion in the middle of the page, title in blue, right above the writer’s avatar (their “face” image), and then their name, user handle, location and various stats, and then a few lines from their discussion. Those few lines are what many consider to be “preview sentences”. Those sentences may be your only chance at getting someone to stop by. Rather like a wonderful smell piped out from a bakery to catch the attention of those walking past, that is your chance to entice someone to stop/read/comment who might not otherwise. Now I read what those I follow write as often as I can, even if I am not interested. Not everyone has that kind of time. Now, when I go exploring, this is an area that really matters to me. Why should I spend my limited time reading your piece? You have an avatar, a title, and a couple of sentences, convince me! Checking the top rated right this moment, the first sentence reads “Yesterday I started one discussion and one only called: 'Reasons why you may not be getting a lot of likes or responses at myLot' (credits to Abby Greenhill). This single discussion has caught numerous people’s attention. Many have stopped by, and I would wager a guess many of those are not people who always stop and comment on her pieces. This piece stood out, grabbed attention, and got discussions rolling. Anyone who has ever written for a newspaper or other journalistic type format knows this to be a fact, don’t bury the lead. That carrot needs to get dangled to get people to want to read more, and to keep them coming back. So I ask, are you burying your lead? Is your first sentence going to be that amazing aroma that leads readers back to your discussions and help you stand out from a crowd? I've known this since 2008 - it's a hook....and the hook can either get 'em in or push 'em way!

After the title, it's the most important part of the discussion.

I need more work on my titles, and to remember to take that first few sentences into consideration! I had gotten sloppy on the previews, and am bad at neat titles.

*********** interrupt this program to bring a special bulletin. ***************** New phone app in the future now being beta tested @Jessicalynnt perhaps I need to define successful for my self interest. "Effective" might define posts that use this method (what a wonderfully written post). However shorter phone text blurbs might be gettin more m o n knee in Dee future!

yeah I saw the thing on the phones, not sure if it was an "app" or just making the site more user friendly, it is HARD to use on a cell.

I feel stupid confessing that while I've always done this on more serious pieces on other sites, it had never entered my head here. Can you believe that! Thanks for the reminder.

It's really easy to get lazy on sites that we consider "less serious," or "just for social interaction." I do it too. It's good to have a reminder of the habits we've observed elsewhere, because anywhere we can earn (or even just build and maintain a following) is a good place to practise the skills we've used on our "serious sites."

As I commented in your previous post on this subject, I haven't given much thought to the preview sentence till now.

I had before, but comments on my discussion rebrought it to my attention, so I edited it back in. I really do use it, if I am digging on new user, or interesting, or any area other than things written by my follower, this preview alone usually is the either the thing that gets to read or move on

I am afraid that here on myLot I have just written as more of a "social" aspect instead of getting more into thinking things through and making important decisions on titles and the opening line. I think you have opened my eyes a bit here and perhaps I should spend more time and effort on my posts.

Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. I've gotten lazy about crafting a good post recently and I too need to be more careful

As with a manuscript for a novel sent to a publisher if the opening lines and paragraph don't grab him he won't read the rest

I have just recently started paying a bit more attention to my title and first sentance... as I know that's what keeps me reading other peoples posts ... or not.....

I am bad at titles, so I try to be sure the first couple sentences are good.
