Emotional benefit of buying a house

Today on the way to work, I overheard two persons talking about their accommodation problem. One person is lamenting that she has to move again because her landlord has sold off the house. Since her migration from China to Singapore, she has to shift house so many times. Her friend asks her to buy a house. At least she has stability, and she can buy whatever furniture she likes. This reminds me of the emotional benefit of buying a house versus renting a house. A house is not a home if you are just a tenant. There is no emotional attachment, and you are not likely to accumulate sentimental items that enhance the enjoyment of life.

That is true . It is not a house if you are just renting . Besides , it's a waste of money renting a house for many years , because you will not be able to own it anyway .

That is true. It is best to buy a house, even a small one. At least you can accumulate equity in the house.

It all comes down to money, doesn't it? If you can afford to buy a home of your own then it's silly not to.

Affordability is not an issue. Those who want to own a house will save up for ages just to have a house. You probably have not seen the determination of the poor Chinese immigrants. They can work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, survive on very little, just so they can save up for a house and to send their children to college.

@jaboUK It is not an issue when the desire is there. The issue is whether they want it badly enough to save up for it.

@scheng1 So how is affordability not an issue? People have to be able to afford homes, that is why they save their money for it. Of course, they have to work hard to be able to do it.

Sometimes it is not easy to buy a house but if you have enought money down and good credit then go for it and buy a house.

@scheng1 He had more than the 20% they asked for but now it is their loss as we went to the Credit Union to see if they would be the ones for us and with me co-signing for him it does look very promising.

Of course it is not easy to buy a house. The downpayment is often 20% of the selling price. It will force a saving habit on those who want to buy their own house. That is good.

Yes, it really has an effect if you know that the house you're living in is 100% yours. People may think renting is good, but in the long run, it's like you're paying for something you would never have a chance to own. If the rental fee is just the same as the monthly pay for your own home, why not just buy, right?

@scheng1 I really wish I have enough money to buy my own home. Right now, I'm living with a relative. I hope I can earn enough to buy myself one.

Yes, many people who cannot save money manage to retire comfortably because they own the house. At least they can choose to rent out a room to get income.

Its always better to own ifyou can afford it but owning isn't for everyone. I like owning so I know its mine & I will only move if it's my choice. I like to have roots

Everyone can own a house, but the restriction imposed by budget means that we cannot stay in a house that we like or in a location that we like. Even those who buy a very small house is still having their own place to stay.

Buy a house if you possibly can. I've said it a lot on here and if you're interested maybe check out this discussion where my advice is mentioned. I'll be linking the other discussion to yours too.
I'm not yet married nor into a relationship. I'm just thinking about my future and my future family. I have come up with this idea after @Mike197602 advised me...

Over here, the home ownership is one of the highest in the world. It is at 90%. I think the permanent residents have a harder time getting a place, because of government restriction.

@scheng1 people here have a hard time getting on the property ladder due to house prices. The government is giving money to people who are first time buyers to help them out. As I mentioned in the discussion I linked to...which came from another discussion...I think home ownership is very very important as it makes us feel secure.

@Mike197602 Yes, that is true, especially when the house is paid in full! The feeling is truly liberating.

A house is a good investment. Its good to buy a house than rent one because renting is like giving away money for nothing.

Actually it is not considered an investment if we are living in it. It is an investment only when we want to sell it away or rent it out.

Not necessarily, you have to be sure that the house you buy is the house you want to stay in forever because if you sale it is money out of your pocket. No matter how you look at life negative or positive you got to look at everything there are benefits to renting and benefits to owning a house period. Your stuck if you own but if you rent you have the option to move the next year your lease is up. Look into your neighborhood before you buy that is all I have to say because if you dont you will regret it and your neighbors. Dont just buy the house because it is beautiful. Your buying that neighborhood.

Over here, nobody buys a house to stay forever. They will stay for 10 years or so, and they will move to a new house. The main consideration for young families is proximity to work and to good school for the children.
