I am a damsel in distress right now!

I am not techy. I am self taught on the computer and get along fine with everything that I need to do - but when it comes to formatting and the like, I am at a complete loss. I am still using XP For a few days now Google Chrome has been informing me that very soon (though it never syas when ) it will no longer be compatible with XP and several other programs no longer update. So what am I supposed to do now? I know that there is Windows 10 available but I have yet to see one person positive and happy with it. Do I switch to using a Mac? But that would be so expensive I have a friend who will do whatever needs doing when the time comes. My computer is quite new and running fine. The problem is that it will be me who has to decide what needs doing and what I should upgrade to - and I have no clue at all

I am perfectly happy with Windows 10, although I am aware that it is still unpopular with most people. If you are uncertain whether to upgrade to it or not, you could try using Linux instead. Linux is free, so if you know someone who will install it for you I would suggest Ubuntu. If you dislike it you can still try Windows 10 and have lost nothing.

@pgiblett I am quite happy with it as well, but every time that Microsoft introduce a new operating system it takes time for people to accept it.

Yes I have a friend who, in his spare time, fixes all sorts of computer problems and he will do whatever needs doing. I presume that he will aslo advise me as to whether I should change OP completely or not. I will contact him later this evening and see when he is available to help.

I don't know why Windows 10 is unpopular, It may have taken 3 hours to install when I first did it, but I regard it as the best operating system for many years by Microsoft. There are also many free apps that are easily downloaded from the store.

Windows 10 is working fine for me. I accepted the free upgrade from 8.1. It's not free from XP to 10, so you would have to buy a licence or a new machine. XP has been out of support from Microsoft for 2 years, so it's time to upgrade I would say. Onwards and upwards!

I hear so many who are not happy with Windows 10 that your comment makes a change and confuses me too. Yes it will be 2 years in April thatt here are no more updates and many programs don't run well anymore now. Always upwards indeed!

@mysdianait All I have read is people not happy with the auto installs and the 'bugs' with certain programmes. There have been bugs with all OPs, and I have always just installed the updates when directed in the past. Doing it automatically is fine with me.

Well, the newer versions of chrome will not be available for windows xp in that case. But you can still carry on with your current version of chrome. It will work fine like it is working now. About news, I haven't read it anywhere so far. But then again I am using windows 7 so may be I am not getting any problem or messages like that.

Yes @topffer left a link in his response so that I can stop the upgrades on Chrome amd maybe continue using it for a little while longer. The message does not state even when the change will take place which is very annoying too. I relly feel useless as I understand absolutely nothing about computers

@mysdianait No worries. @topffer has send you perfect link to stop the updates. You can do it to stop any further updates of Chrome. So you can continue using current version of Chrome without any problem.

Windows 7 is fine for some time, after XP and Vista Chrome will also exclude Win 7, and perhaps Win 8 too.

@fishtiger58 @pgiblett This is my problem. I am hearing so many conflicting reviews of Windows 10 that I really don't know what I should do for the best. I hope my computer friend, who knows that I am ignorant about the techy side, will put me on the right track and do what he thinks is best. If he does soemthing that then does not work he will be here often so it is in his best interests to choose the best option methinks.

Windows 8 is the worst mess of an operating system that Microsoft ever came out with. No sane person like the Metro interface. I have been upgraded to Windows 10 for more than 6 months and have to say it is the best upgrade I have ever completed. Windows 10 is the O/S that Windows 8 should have been.

What should I say now? I am a bit late it seems.... I will just tell you what I know. Vista and XP have been outdated a while ago. When we had our PC back in 2009, they were only installing Windows 7. We have had Win 7 since then. Win 8 we tried but reverted back to win 7 as it suited better to us. Windows 10 that has come out would surely be better version. I mean soon all those I had mentioned above would soon have to be upgraded to that. So, why not just do it now than wait and do it all over again later. I know that there are bugs being reported with this OS but it will only be removed if we use it and report them just like we had reported bugs to new my lot, right? We are still using Win 7 but I know my brother would upgrade it to Win 10 when he likes it. I have left it to him.

I am totally ignorant about all of the OPs and what is good about them and what is bad. There are so many differeing opinions here in the responses too that I am even more confused and the final decision will be left to my computer doctor friend. He has always done the right thing for me up to now and I am sure (I hope) that he will this time too as I haven't a clue what to do for the best

I don't know who you are talking to about Windows 10, it is by far the best operating system Microsoft have had out in a long while. It is clear you need to migrate away from XP. I wholly recommend going to Windows 10 and doing it as soon as you can, you will not regret it.

Offline and online friends, and some of the responses here as you have seen, are not as enthusiastic about Wondows 10 as you are and this is what is making any decision impossible for me. @mysdianait 6 years is a long time in computer terms. People do seem, on here, to not like windows 10 but they aren't saying why or what they're doing. I've not had a single problem. Maybe time to get a new computer? There are plenty of second hand ones available from reputable places. I don't think you can get the free update to windows 10 so after paying for the new OS I think it'd maybe be a better idea to buy something new? I'd be happy to help you research for the best price on a new/second hand one although it'd have to be UK based as I don't read Italian....I'm a good researcher though and am a good bargain hunter.
