Ten Commandments - Third Commandment

Third Commandment You might have noticed a pattern regarding the commandments God gave us. These first four commandments focus on our relationship to God. In the First Commandment God told us we are to worship only Him, no one else. He is above all other gods, because the gods of this world are idols made with man’s hands. However, God is eternal and He created everything, including man who creates the gods men worship and put above God their creator. In the Second Commandment God showed us who and what we aren’t to worship. We are not to worship anything God created. Now in the Third Commandment God shows us that it is offensive to God to take His name in vain. Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. What is taking God’s name in vain? Anytime you say God’s name out of perfect reverence and respect for who God is, and in worship of Him, you take God’s name in vain. That includes the name of Jesus, as well as the Holy Spirit. I cannot count how many times a day I hear someone using God’s name in a profane way. God and Jesus are used interchangeably as swear words or everyday words that have no meaning to the person using it. Even the new OMG is disrespectful to God and does not give Him the glory and honor due Him. God’s name is so powerful that He will not hold us guiltless when we use it carelessly. When used with reverence and respect, giving honor and glory to God, you can move mountains, heal the sick, and forgive those who do any kind of harm to you. Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (KJV) Mark 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. (KJV) God told Moses that anyone who claimed to speak in God’s name would die. God also told Moses how people would know God had spoken. Deuteronomy 18:19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. (KJV) Jesus also told His disciples that when we ask for anything in Jesus’ name, He will do it. He also told His disciples He would send the Holy Spirit to them to teach them everything Jesus taught them. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. (KJV) John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (KJV) God’s name has power and those who use His name without thought, will not go unpunished. Image courtesy of Pixabay

How would you feel toward someone who had devoted his or her life to serving Christ, put the needs of the poor above his or her own needs, but occasionally said "OMG!" in jest?

Even not necessarily in jest, but in conversing with God. Like Oh my, God-like what are we going to do about that God? A lot depends on the person's heart or intention. Most, like Valerie shows don't give a hoot how they sound or whose name they're using, but each situation can be different with different intentions and different results.

@MarshaMusselman I agree that intent is important. It's what's in your heart that matters.

@TheHorse Anyone who devoted their life to Christ would not say that in jest, and if they did, God would not hold them guiltless. The only thing they can do, is confess their sin, because that is what it is, and God will forgive them - 1 John 1:9.

I wince when I hear the Lord's name taken in vain, and it's pretty common these days on TV and in the movies. But I think a lot of us say the OMG thing just out of habit and it's a good habit to break.

Yes it is. I had no idea what it meant until I asked someone and was shocked that yet again, people have found another way to profane God's name.

You should confess it whenever you find yourself saying it.

@Letranknight2015 You can confess anytime anywhere. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV)

I always thought this command also pertained to people who preached things that didn't come from god as something that came from god. The false prophets if you like, I'd imagine there's a harsher degree of punishment for those than anyone else.

Ah, that's an interesting point. I like Matthew (in the Bible) because it deals with hypocrisy in several places.

@TheHorse Yes it does. Hypocrisy is more than just saying one thing and doing another, it's causing someone to do something you don't do yourself. I believe that's covered in Matthew 23 or 24. I'd need to look at it to be certain.

@just4him Oh ya, there's so many people that proclaim they are the next prophet, and they are totally just there for a quick buck. That's how I always interpreted this command

that is why I do not like to hear some curses of other Filipinos because they say the name of God in the curse

@just4him I think if you simply model kindness and compassion around another person, that kindness and compassion will begin to rub off on them.

When you hear it, pray for that person. You don't even need to say something to that person, they won't accept it anyway. However, the Holy Spirit will convict them when you pray for them. It might not happen right away, but you should see them using God's name less.
